Volleyball: Freedom, LaMantia Clinch AAA Regional Bid in Milestone Season
Special to VivaLoudoun
South Riding (Oct. 30, 2011) - Just four volleyball seasons ago, Freedom High School had a varsity program that had won only one game. Kaitlyn LaMantia, then a freshman, learned a valuable lesson: it was clear that other teams were quicker and stronger.
Freedom started to click her sophomore season when the Eagles won 11 games. Everybody in the program was getting better and it showed. With 18 wins last season, Freedom earned the school's first ever regional and state volleyball appearances.
This year the Eagles goal is to surpass the 18-win mark and return to the state playoffs, even though they have been promoted to the larger-school AAA classification. LaMantia and the Eagles, with a 17-5 record, have already clinched a regional bid after capturing the school's first ever district volleyball title last week with wins over then-leader Broad Run and Stonewall Jackson.
If that milestone wasn't enough, LaMantia, the only 4-year varsity starter Freedom has had in the history of the program, has achieved a record that is a very uncommon milestone in volleyball for a player that plays setter half the time she is on the court and also plays outside hitter the other half of the time.
The milestone: LaMantia has achieved her 1,000 career assist Thursday night in the district-title clinching win against Stonewall Jackson.

Football: Loudoun County Keeps Title Hopes Alive with 43-21 Win Over Heritage
By Carl Lukat
Times-Mirror Staff Writer
The task was clear for the Loudoun County Raiders following their 16-9 loss to Tuscarora on Sept. 23. The Raiders needed to run the table through their next five games to stay in contention for the AA Dulles District football title entering their season finale at Briar Woods.
Loudoun County put the finishing touch on that task in emphatic fashion Oct. 28 against Leesburg rival Heritage. The Raiders raced out to a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter on their way to a 43-21 victory over the host Pride on a rain-filled Friday evening in Leesburg.

Football: Tuscarora Keeps Dulles District Title Hopes Alive After Comeback Win over Woodgrove
(Oct. 29, 2011) - Tuscarora High School trailed for the first three quarters Friday night against a determined Woodgrove squad, including a 12-point deficit in the second quarter, before riding senior Cameron Molina's four rushing touchdowns to a 43-28 Dulles District comeback win.
Both the Huskies and Wolverines football programs are in their second seasons but Tuscarora is bound for the playoffs with a 8-1 record and hopes of a share of the district title. The Huskies (6-1 in district) need to beat Leesburg neighbor Heritage (5-2, 6-3) next Friday and hope that Loudoun County (6-1, 8-1) can knock off Briar Woods (7-0, 8-1). In that scenario, Briar Woods, Loudoun County and Tuscarora would finish as tri-champs.

Football: Disjointed Bulldogs Clinch Share of 7th Straight Liberty District Title
By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun Editor
(Oct. 29, 2011) - The Stone Bridge High School football team is leading a double life.
On one hand you have a team with an 8-1 record after defeating Madison Friday night, 35-20, to clinch a share of the program's seventh consecutive Liberty District title. That makes 47 district wins in 48 games since joining the Liberty in 2005 and Stone Bridge is now just two wins away from an unheard of 10 consecutive seasons with 10+ wins.
On the other hand, Stone Bridge demonstrated Friday that they are a ways away from making a fourth trip to the VHSL Division 5 finals in five years. Despite the win over the Warhawks, which came into the game 6-0 in district, the Bulldogs were left ruminating over a litany of miscues -- interceptions, fumbles on their own goal line, blocked field goal attempts, onsides kicks not covered and key penalties.
"Disjointed," was how Stone Bridge coach Mickey Thompson summed up his team on the eve of the postseason.

Football: Share and Share Alike -- Shares of District Titles Won Friday in Cedar Run, Dulles and Liberty Districts
(Oct. 29, 2011) - With only one more week left in the regular season, area football teams put the moves on district titles Friday with Briar Woods High School claiming a share of the Dulles District title and Stone Bridge putting a hold on a share of their seventh straight Liberty District title.
In the Cedar Run District, Osbourn and Battlefield have completed their seasons (with byes next week) and the Eagles and Bobcats each have a share of the district title with Broad Run expected to make it tri-champions next week. Here is the title picture in each district:
Dulles District: Briar Woods has earned a share of its second straight Dulles crown with an 7-0 district mark. Both Loudoun County and Tuscarora kept their district title hopes alive with wins as they improved to 6-1 in the Dulles. The Raiders can claim a co-championship with a win next week at Briar Woods. If County does knock off Briar Woods and Tuscarora is able to beat Heritage, then the three schools would be tri-champions. Heritage's loss to County on Friday dropped the Pride to 5-2 in district and eliminated them from the banner picture.
Cedar Run District: Battlefield already had a share of the district title after knocking off Broad Run last week to finish 3-1 in the small 5-team CR. Osbourn's win over Freedom left them 3-1 as well and at least co-champions. If Broad Run is able to beat 1-win Freedom next week in South Riding then there would be tri-champions.
Liberty District: Seasons come and the season go but some things remain constant such as Stone Bridge celebrating a Liberty District title. The Bulldogs have clinched at least a share with a 6-0 mark. Madison, which fell to Stone Bridge Friday, is 5-1 and can finish co-champions if Fairfax can upset the Bulldogs next week. Fairfax's loss to Langley on Friday left both teams 4-2 and out of the title race.
Complete standings for all three districts.

Baseball: Broad Run's Chris Johnson to Play at UVA-Wise in 2012-13
Ashburn (Oct. 28, 2011) - Broad Run High School senior 2nd baseman Chris Johnson recently accepted a partial, athletic scholarship to play baseball at UVA-Wise starting in 2012-13. UVA-Wise is a Division II, NAIA school in Wise, Virginia.
Johnson has had two very productive years as an infielder at Broad Run. As a junior, Johnson hit .370 with 6 doubles helping the team finish with a school-record 23 wins; the Spartans won the Dulles District Championship, the Region II Championship, and ended their season in the AA State Semi-Finals. As a sophomore, Johnson played 2nd base and committed no errors on the season; the Spartans ended the season with a 17-5 mark and made it to the Region Semi-Finals.

Volleyball: Tonight's Skinny - Broad Run and Freedom Tangle in Ashburn with Cedar Run District Title on the Line; County Can Clinch Dulles Title
(Oct. 25, 2011) - The final week of the high school girls volleyball season gets in full swing tonight with district implications across the board. At Broad Run High School, the Spartans can clinch a share of the Cedar Run District title with a win over second-place Freedom. A win by the Eagles would knot the race with just one game remaining.
In the Dulles District, Loudoun County has already clinched at least a share of the regular-season title and the Raiders can win it outright with a victory on the road at Dominion.
In the Liberty District, both Stone Bridge, at TJ, and Langley, hosting Fairfax, look to remain perfect in advance of Thursday's showdown in Ashburn.
Tuesday Night Schedule
Dulles District
Briar Woods (10-4 in district) at Heritage (13-2)
The Skinny: Heritage can clinch second place with a win tonight. Briar Woods is two back of the Pride and two ahead of Potomac Falls. This is a potential semifinal match-up in the district tournament.
Loudoun County (14-0) at Dominion (4-10)
The Skinny: Titans have back-to-back wins to move into a tie for 6th but the Raiders are on another mission to wrap up the district title.
Park View (0-14) at Woodgrove (3-11)
The Skinny: The Patriots will not make the district tournament but can make their season with a win tonight in Purcellville. The Wolverines want to move out of the No. 8 spot prior to the postseason or else face a potential district quarterfinal match at Loudoun County
Tuscarora (4-10) at Potomac Falls (8-6)
The Skinny: The Panthers roll into this match after beating Valley on Monday. That win puts PFalls just ahead of the Vikes in a quest to earn homecourt advantage in the district quarterfinals. The Huskies can finish anywhere from No. 6 to No. 8.
Cedar Run District
Freedom (7-1 in district) at Broad Run (8-0)
The Skinny: The Spartans have quietly been one of the bigger stories this season with only one loss -- a non-district contest to South County -- since dropping the season-opener to Stone Bridge. A win tonight would clinch at least a share of the district regular-season title for BR. Freedom can throw the race into a dead heat with a win tonight.
Patriot (0-8) at Battlefield (5-3)
The Skinny: First-year Patriot is looking for its first district win but don't expect "Big Sister" Battlefield to provide it.
Stonewall Jackson (2-6) at Osbourn (2-6)
The Skinny: Winner moves into fourth place in this match-up of Manassas schools.
Liberty District
Stone Bridge (5-0 in district) at TJ (1-4)
The Skinny: Bulldogs have won 10 straight and are ranked No. 1 in the Northern Region. TJ has dropped five straight after a good non-district run.
Fairfax (3-2) at Langley (5-0)
The Skinny: Langley shouldn't overlook a Rebel team that has done well this season.
Madison (1-4) at South Lakes (2-3)
The Skinny: Is South Lakes for real ... a win tonight would cement the Seahawks regional hopes.
McLean (3-2) at Marshall (0-5)
The Skinny: Highlanders should cruise against a Marshal team that has just two wins on year.
In the Dulles District, Loudoun County has already clinched at least a share of the regular-season title and the Raiders can win it outright with a victory on the road at Dominion.

Football: VHSL Ratings Updated - Park View Vaults to Playoff Position to Make 7 Loudoun Teams with Postseason Potential
(Oct. 24, 2011) - In the age of the expanded playoffs a late season win and 3-6 record is good enough to put Park View High School in playoff position as the Patriots vaulted to the No. 8 spot in the current Region II Division 4 VHSL ratings released Monday.
If Park View can hold its spot, it would give the Dulles District half of the regional field with Briar Woods (7-1) currently No. 2 in Division 4, Lodoun County (7-1) sits No. 4 and Heritage (6-2) at No. 6. It would be the Pride's first ever playoff appearance.
In Division 3, Tuscarora (7-1) is tied for No. 3 in Region II. In the Northern Region, Stone Bridge (7-1) sits No. 3 in Division 5 and in the Northwest Region, Broad Run (6-2), despite its loss to Battlefield, maintains the No. 2 spot.

2 spot.

Football: Park View's Seniors Deliver in 45-17 Win Over Loudoun Valley
Special to Viva Loudoun
By Carl Lukat
Loudoun Times-Mirror Staff Writer
Purcellville (Oct. 22, 2011) - Park View High School senior Ryan McCarter turned in a full night's work in just a six-minute span to start the second half during the Patriots' AA Dulles District football game at Loudoun Valley Friday.
After intercepting a pass on the first series of the third quarter, McCarter hauled in touchdown receptions of 75 and 85 yards from senior quarterback Alec Dombkowski on two of the Patriots' first three offensive plays of the half.
"I started off a little slow," McCarter said. "I had to step it up a little bit and make some plays."
McCarter finished with eight receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns, along with two interceptions on defense, as Park View kept its playoff hopes alive with a 45-17 victory on homecoming night at Loudoun Valley.

Football: Broad Run Falls at Home for First Times Since 2007 as Battlefield Beats Spartans, 28-20
By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun Editor
Ashburn (Oct. 23, 2011) – The Broad Run High School football team could have all-but-clinched the AAA Cedar Run District football title Friday night at home against defending VHSL Division 6 state champion Battlefield, but it was the Bobcats celebrating a share of the district title after handing the Spartans their first defeat at home since the 2007 playoffs.
Battlefield (3-1, 7-2) built a 20-0 first-half lead and then held on against a furious Broad Run comeback for a 28-20 win. Broad Run (1-1, 6-2) can tie Battlefield for the regular-season title with wins to finish against district foes Stonewall Jackson (1-2, 4-4).
And it could likely be a 3-way tie for the title in the 5-team district as Osbourn (2-1, 6-3) needs only to finish with a win over struggling Freedom (0-2, 1-7). Battlefield ends the regular season with a non-district game with North Stafford. Both the Bobcats and Osbourn have byes the week before the playoffs.
For the Spartans, which last fell at home in the first round of the 2007 Region II playoffs to Park View, it was a second straight week with a first half where their opponents put up a 20 spot on the scoreboard. While a week earlier, against Osbourn, Broad Run quarterback had rallied his team to 21 first-half points to take the lead into the locker room, this time the Spartans struggled to just 61 first-half total yards and trailed 20-0.
