"I will be brought in as a wide receiver and was told I could contribute on special teams soon if I worked hard and would have a shot to earn a scholarship in the future," said Rolin.

Rolin joins Stone Bridge senior quarter Brian Rody who has also accepted a preferred walk-on offer from Virginia Tech.

Girls Basketball: Batts Scores 31 to Lead Loudoun County to Regional Title

Bealeton (Feb. 27, 2011) - No matter the outcome of Saturday's Region II Division 4 girls basketball championship game between Loudoun County High School and host Liberty, both teams knew they were going to advance to the Division 4 state tournament as region finalists.

Loudoun County first-year coach Derek Fisher still had a message for his team before the game, "There are a lot of good players and good teams that never get a chance to play in these types of games. You have to cherish the opportunity to play in a regional championship game."

Fisher's message was well received. Loudoun County went on a 13-1 run during a four-minute span to end the first half and begin the second, turning a 22-22 tie into a 35-23 lead. Liberty made a push in the fourth quarter, pulling within seven before Raider senior Brittany Batts converted 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal a 56-40 victory.

Boys Basketball: A Perfect 10! Potomac Falls Senior Class Brilliant Run at Panther Pit Snags Another Regional Title

Champions Again! (photos courtesy of Kristin Stubbs)

Sterling (Feb. 27, 2011) - Forget for a moment that 6-foot-7 junior Greg Graves had a game-high 28 points, fueled by a variety of sweet moves that should have college scouts drooling, the real story Saturday Night at Potomac Falls High School was about the 10 Panther seniors as they crowned a two-year brilliant run at home with a second straight Region II Division boys basketball title.

Playing a Liberty team that they beat in last year's title game, 85-62, and defeated again in December to open the season, 82-74, the Panther seniors turned their final appearance in the Panther Pit into a 32-minute long encore as they ran the Eagles off the court, 96-58.

"I have all the respect in the world for Liberty ... but there was no way in the world that this team is losing their last game here. Not with 10 seniors playing their last game in this building," said Potomac Falls coach Jeff Hawes.

In a year in which they are trying to repeat last year's feat of becoming the only Loudoun boys basketball team in history to win a state title, the Panthers (27-1) will have to repeat their state quarterfinal win from last year as they will face Tabb for a second straight season at Robinson High School next weekend -- most likely on Saturday.

Before Potomac Falls could think about Tabb, there were tears and hugs first as family and friends engulfed the team after the regional awards ceremony. The Potomac Falls senior class -- 52-3 overall the past two seasons and unbeaten on their home floor marred only by a loss to AAA Loudoun Valley in December 2009 -- had one final act to carry out and that was cutting down the nets as a ladder was secured and the team took turns snipping a bit of net before Hawes did the final honors to cheers.

Basketball: Twin Titles as Both Loudoun County Girls, Potomac Falls Boys Claim Region II Division 4 Crowns

(Feb. 26, 2011) - It was twin Region II Division 4 titles for Loudoun basketball teams Saturday night as the Loudoun County High School girls went on the road and downed Liberty, 56-50, and Potomac Falls High School boys basketball brilliant senior class made their final appearance in the Panther Pit a memorable 96-58 blowout win over Liberty.

Loudoun County (24-4) will host Eastern View (17-9), a 42-39 loser against Grafton in the Region I final, in the AA Division 4 state quarterfinals while Potomac Falls (27-1) will take on Tabb (21-7), a 59-49 loser to King George in the Region I final, in a state quarterfinal rematch from last year. Both the Raiders and Panthers will play host at Robinson High School next weekend, most likely on Saturday.

Girls Basketball: Foxcroft's Claire Andrews Named First Team All-DAC

Middleburg (Feb. 25, 2011) - Claire Andrews, a senior center who led the Foxcroft School basketball team with power, skill, and heart, has been named to the first team of the Division I All-Delaney Athletic Conference squad for the 2010-11 season, Athletic director Michelle Woodruff announced Friday.

Andrews was one of 13 players awarded all-DAC honors by the division’s six coaches -- a remarkable feat considering that Foxcroft did not win a Division I game this season. This marks the second year in a row that Foxcroft has had a first team all-DAC selection. Terry Lynne Garvey, a member of the Class of 2010 and a freshman at Gettysburg College, earned the honor last season.

Andrews, a resident of Pacific, MO, led Foxcroft in scoring with 8.2 points per game, rebounding (7.9 rpg), and blocked shots (3.4 bpg). She led the conference in blocked shots. Over the last six games of the regular season – all against quality DAC Division opponents -- she averaged 14 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks.

Andrews saved her best effort for the playoffs, recording a rare triple-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 13 blocked shots in a first-round loss Tuesday to Wakefield School. That game, however, did not figure in the voting, which had already been completed.

Girls Lacrosse: Stone Bridge Junior Kayla Sleece Makes Early Commitment to Play at NCAA Division I Louisville

(Feb. 25, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School junior Kayla Sleece, who was a Northern Region first team midfielder as a sophomore, has made an early commitment to play lacrosse at the University of Louisville starting in 2012-13.

Sleece scored more than 40 goals and had more than 40 assists last season as she helped the Bulldogs to a 14-5 record and regional appearance. Sleece had five first-half goals as Stone Bridge nearly knocked off power Woodson in the regional quarterfinals, falling late, 11-9.

Football: Stone Bridge Quarterback Brian Rody Accpets Preferred Walk-on Status at Virginia Tech

Ashburn (Feb. 25, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School football coach Mickey Thompson said today that senior quarterback Brian Rody has accepted preferred walk-on status next year at Virginia Tech.

Rody told Hokiehaven.com that he was "just happy to find a home for next year."

In his two seasons as a starter at Stone Bridge after transferring from Heritage, Rody helped the Bulldogs go 13-2 in 2009 and 14-1 in 2010, falling each season in the VHSL Division 5 state finals to Phoebus. He finished last season with 2,045 yards on 120 for 213 passing with 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Rody, listed at 6-foot-6, 220-pounds, said he wants to work on his footwork and improve his mechanics.

Boys Basketball: Precise Shooting Potomac Falls Clinches Return Trip to State Tournament

By Jason S. Rufner
Special to VivaLoudoun.com via Loudoun Times-Mirror

Sterling (Feb. 25, 2011) - If the phrase "shooting the lights out" were literal, the gymnasium at Potomac Falls High School would have gone completely dark long before the end of the Panthers' 86-61 shootout win over Briar Woods on Thursday.

The home team riled up Potomac Falls' always rambunctious crowd with barrages of marksmanlike outside shooting that persisted all game long in the Region II Division 4 boys semifinal matchup.

The victory propels the Panthers (26-1) to an appearance in the region title game and the automatic spot in the Division 4 state tournament that comes with it. They also secure a chance to defend the Division 4 state championship won a year ago in the program's 14th season of existence, all under coach Jeff Hawes. First the Panthers will host Liberty Saturday at 7 p.m. in the regional title game.

"We shot 64 percent last night against Broad Run and I'd venture to say we were close to that again," said Hawes, referencing his squad's 86-56 win on the same floor Wednesday against the Spartans in a regional quarterfinal.

Girls Basketball: Raiders Rule Region with 54-51 Win over Rival Freedom in Latest Match-up in Epic Series

By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun Editor

Leesburg (Feb. 25, 2011) - The epic series between the Freedom and Loudoun County high school girls basketball teams stretched across 17 incredible games during the brilliant 4-year careers of Eagle swing player Dionna Scott and Raider guard Brittany Batts and the two veterans saved the best for last as they combined for 47 points Thursday night in a contest won by Loudoun County, 54-51.

The win avenged a loss by the Raiders at Freedom in last year's Region II Division 4 semifinals and sent Loudoun County onto the regional final Saturday at 7 p.m. at Liberty and assured the Raiders of a trip to the VHSL state tournament in a week.

"I love playing against Freedom. You know they are always going to bring it," said Batts who scored 14 of her team-high 23 points in the final quarter, the most she has ever scored against two-time defending state champion Freedom. "That loss (in regionals) last year was tough so getting them back on our homecourt tonight felt great."

Scott, with a game-high 24 points and team-high 16 rebounds -- her second best offensive effort ever against the Raiders -- did everything she could as Freedom, with junior Alexis Mayo scoring 15 points, built a 10-point first half advantage but Loudoun County fought back and nosed ahead in the second half.

Basketball: State Bids on the Line Tonight in Regional Semifinals

(Feb. 24, 2011) - Loudoun has gotten big enough these days that it certainly feels like its own region so it should come of no surprise that local basketball teams road to the state tournament are paved mostly with local foes in region this year including a pair of match-ups tonight that feature the Briar Woods boys at Potomac Falls and the Freedom girls at Loudoun County.

The winner of those games will qualify for the VHSL state tournament as well as advance to Saturday's Region II Division 4 finals and the loser will have their season end. The fifth Loudoun team still playing is Cinderella Woodgrove -- a first year school that entered the playoffs under .500 and sits just one win away from making states with a roster without any seniors. The Wolverines, with very little rest, hit the road to Fluvanna tonight in the Division 3 semifinals.

The Skinny of the Region II Semifinals
Girls Division 4
Freedom vs. Loudoun County ... AGAIN!
The Skinny: The Eagles and Raiders (with three combined state titles in the last two years -- Freedom '09 and '10 and LC in '09) have now faced each other nine times in the last two years and 13 times in the past three years. The Raiders have won the past two including a 54-49 win over the Eagles in last Friday's district finals and a 55-40 win in the second half of the regular season.

The Series
2010-11
LC 54-49 (district finals)
LC 55-40
F 52-33

2009-10
F 49-40 (regional semifinals)

LC 69-58 (district finals)
F 76-60 (one-game playoff for #1 seed)
LC 57-40
F 54-47

2008-09
F 61-57 (district finals)
F 49-42

F 58-41
F 73-49 (season opening tournament)

Boys Division 4
Briar Woods at Potomac Falls
The Skinny: The Panthers already beat district foe Broad Run and now a win over Dulles District opponent Briar Woods would put PFalls back in the state tournament where they won it all last year. Myles Tate is the catalyst for the Falcons with sophomore Matt Rolin playing an important role inside vs. the 6-foot-7 Greg Graves and 6-6 Mickey Wagenhoffer. The Panthers with only one loss on the season appear to be primed to defend their title ... as long as they can keep the flour off the floor!

Boys Division 3
Woodgrove at Fluvanna
The Skinny: Hey haven't we seen this before ... a coach (Steve Douglas) takes a school not known for basektball (Dominion or Woodgrove) and has a super scorer (DeAndre Albritton or Brad Gilson) and a supporting cast that play their roles perfectly (Smucker  brothers or Brendan Wells/Brett Danielson) and makes a run to the state playoffs! Gilson, a smooth-shooting lanky junior is the Real Deal with 38 points in the quarterfinal win over Monticello including five treys and 15 for 18 at the line to go with 11 rebounds and three blocks. Wells had 14 points and Danielson scored eight with three steals. It will take a big upset for Woodgrove to advance but Douglas may have found the magic formula.

Wrestling: Freedom Finishes 12th in AA with Gaetani and Timbers Both 3rd; Loudoun Has 8 Place in States

(Feb. 24, 2011) - Freedom High School, with three medalists including a pair of third place finishes by 130-pounder Sean Gaetani and 285-pounder DaQuante Timbers, came away with a 12th place finish last weekend at the AA state wrestling meet in Salem.

The Eagles, with their highest state tournament finish ever, were just eight points away from 10th.

"It is also the 2nd year in a row where we have had three all state wrestlers, which is quite an accomplishment considering none of those boys began wrestling before their freshmen year of high school," reported Freedom caoch Kent Nagy "All of this has been accomplished through the hard work of our wrestlers, coaches and certainly parents, who have dedicated countless hours in support of their kids. We as a coaching staff are exceptionally proud of all of our young men, who represent themselves so well in our community."

Football: Briar Woods Big Playmaker Junior Alex Carter Drawing College Interest with Six Verbal Offers

Carter makes leaping grab in state title win

(Feb. 24, 2011) - Briar Woods High School big playmaker Alex Carter, a junior WR/DB that helped the Falcons to the school's first ever state football title in December, is drawing bigtime interest from NCAA Division I schools with six verbal offers already from Virginia, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Stanford, Duke and Kansas State.

Falcon coach Charlie Pierce says that Tennessee and Notre Dame are close to making their offers soon.

"Alex has a lot to offer to these programs on offense, defense or special teams," said Pierce.

Carter, son of former Washington Redskins defensive back Tom Carter, led Briar Woods in all-purpose yards and in total receptions with 48 for an average of 15.8 yards per catch.

Averaging 4.6 yards per rush, Carter was electrifying on returns, averaging 38.5 yards per kickoff return and scoring two touchdowns including a school-reocrd 98-yarder. He finished second on the team with 11 total touchdowns.

On defense, he had 50 total tackles with two interceptions and 10 pass break ups.

"The one thing that really stands out with his play is his ability to come up with big plays when the team needed it," said Pierce.

Those big plays in the playoffs included a 65-yard field-reversing catch-and-run TD against Liberty in the regional playoffs that was the game's only score and a leaping grab that he turned into a 77-yard touchdown in the state title game against Harrisonburg. That catch from freshman quarterback Trace McSorley came with Briar Woods trailing and turned the game around as the Falcons went on to win 41-21. On the defensive side of the ball he had an interception return of 38 yards for a score in the state semifinals.

In the classroom, Carter tackles AP and honor classes while carrying a 4.10 GPA leading Pierce to label him truly an "outstanding student athlete."

College Signing: Two Stone Bridge Athletes Make Choices - State Discus Champ Springman to Pitt and Shortstop Lighton to Play at UVA-Wise

Ashburn (Feb. 24, 2011) - Stone Bridge's talented Class of 2011 has had two more college commitments this week as state discus champion Haley Springman will join the NCAA Division I Pitt track and field team and shortstop Ty Lighton will play baseball for NAIA University of Virginia at Wise.

Spring won district, regional and a AAA state title in 2010.

Lighton, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound shortstop for the Bulldogs, has played baseball under Coach Sam Plank since his freshman season and took the reins as starting varsity short stop last year after lettering as a sophomore.

“Ty is a tremendous athlete who has developed into one of the best middle infielders in the Northern Region. UVA Wise is getting a great baseball player, said Plank. "

Lighton has grown up in Ashburn and began playing baseball for Dulles Little League at age 5. At age 9, Lighton began playing for the Potomac Riverdogs and was a key contributor to the Riverdogs 7th place finish at the 10U AAU Nationals and 3rd place at the 13U AAU Nationals.

Since then, Lighton has played for several elite local teams, most recently as short stop for the Virginia Barnstormers. The Virginia Barnstormers team won the NABF World Series in Knoxville, TN during the summer of 2010, going 7-0 over the four day tournament.

Lighton was selected as first team all-district shortstop for his performance during the 2010 season at Stone Bridge. He has a strong arm, great hands and foot speed and is a natural team leader. During the 2010 campaign he had 23 put outs and 53 assists in addition to combining on 5 double plays. Offensively he had two doubles and two triples during the season.

"I really appreciate all of the guidance and support I have been given by my parents, Coach Plank and my other coaches," said Lighton. “I am extremely happy to be given the opportunity to play at the University of Virginia College at Wise and I am looking forward to working with the coaches and my future teammates to bring a championship home to UVA-Wise."

Boys Basketball: Depth Charge! Deep Potomac Falls Torpedoes Broad Run Once Again

Sterling (Feb. 23, 2011) - A little over a year ago the Potomac Falls High School boys basketball team fell to rival Broad Run , 48-46, and when Panther coach Jeff Hawes went to the videotape he saw a tired starting unit stagger down the stretch while his bench barely broke a sweat.

Hawes vowed to never let that happen again and since then the Panthers have used their bench and depth to become the best AA team in the state -- winning eight straight to close out last season, including wins over Broad Run in the district and regional tournaments, as Potomac Falls collected Loudoun's first ever boys basketball state title.

This year with the entire starting line-up back and most of the bench, the depth charges have continued as Potomac Falls has won 24 of 25 -- the only loss to AAA power Osbourn -- including three more wins over Broad Run, by 11 points in December and then by 22 points earlier this month and Wednesday night by a whopping 30 points, 86-56, in the Region II Division 4 quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Potomac Falls (25-1) will face another familiar foe Thursday in the semifinals as the Panthers host Dulles District foe Briar Woods (17-9), as the No. 5 seed Falcons went on the road Wednesday and beat No. 4 Fauquier, 83-67, with Myles Tate scoring 31 to go with 19 from Matt Rolin, 16 from Curtis Calder and 10 from Corey Faciane.

Special to VivaLoudoun

Sterling (Feb. 23, 2011) - While the Potomac Falls High School boys varsity has been impressive this season with just one loss heading into tonight's regional finals, the Panthers  JV team this year was even more impressive with over 1,300 points scored and an average of 64 points per game during an unbeaten season.

Kip Shallis, the JV boys coach, knew exactly how to lead the team to their full potential this season:. “All season long, we wanted to win in three essential phases of the game: individual ability, toughness/effort, and execution. If we brought those three qualities daily we would be a very difficult team to beat.”

All 12 JV Panthers had a role, and every role was needed for this team to be successful.

Football: Broad Run Junior Quarterback Connor Jessop Gets Offer from University of Richmond

Photo copyright by Jeff Scudder 2010
Ashburn (Feb. 23, 2011) - Broad Run High School junior quarterback Connor Jessop has received his first scholarship offer, from the University of Richmond. More offers are likely to come from the 6-foot-4 Jessop who threw for more than 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns despite playing just four games last season due to injury.

As a sophomore Jessop threw for 1,336 yards and 14 touchdowns and scored five on the ground as he led the Spartans to a VHSL Division 4 state title and perfect 14-0 season. In the 21-16 title game win over Amherst, with star running back T.J. Peeler injured early, Jessop calmly threw for three scores on 12 of 20 for 135 yards.

Jessop's junior season was derailed with a broken collarbone in the second week of the season but he returned in the playoffs to lead Broad Run to the Region II title game where the Spartans fell, 24-21, to rival Briar Wood despite Jessop throwing for three scores and 274 yards on 21 of 26 passing. Jessop's numbers for 2010 projected out to a full season would have been an incredible 39 touchdowns and 3,209 passing yards.

News: BioMechanic Physical Therapy Becomes Newest Sponsor of VivaLoudoun.com

By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun Editor

(Feb. 23, 2011) - VivaLoudoun.com announced today that BioMechanic Physical Therapy has become the newest sponsor of the growing website's coverage of high school sports and education news in Loudoun County, Va.

BioMechanic Physical Therapy (BMPT), located in Lansdowne, has seven manual therapists on staff. In addition to a foot and ankle specialist and a spine specialist, BMPT also treats the entire body with therapists who treat hands, shoulders, scoliosis, migraines, pre and post surgery and even pediatrics.

"At VivaLoudoun we are always looking for sponsors that offer a valuable service to our fans and the healthcare professionals at BioMechanic Physical Therapy can help everybody from the high school athlete to their grandparents," said VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa.

The idea behind the name BioMechanic Physical Therapy has to do with the mechanics of how the body works. BMPT believes that in order to solve a physical ailment, you must analyze why it happened, and correct the mechanical problem that created it. Of course, not all problems fit in this category, such as injury due to accident or disease. BMPT treats those as well.

BioMechanic Physical Therapy offers a hard-to-find method, called muscle energy technique, for treating back and neck pain that has been very successful.

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) was developed by Dr. Fred Mitchell, and the technique aims at relaxing muscle spasms and helping to restore proper joint alignment. MET is basically an electro-physiological trick that encourages muscles to relax more quickly than normal. MET is a non-invasive direct hands-on therapy. MET can be used to treat almost all joints in the body.

BioMechanic Physical Therapy is located at 19441 Golf Vista Plaza, Suite 340, in Lansdowne, VA 20176. Contact them by phone at (703)-723-7726 or by fax (703)-723-9587. Their hours are Monday to Friday 7-7 and Saturdays 8-2.

Girls Basketball: Black and Blue Bulldogs into Regional Quarterfinals with 43-30 win over Hayfield

Murielle Tiernan and Cori Prince each had 13 points Monday night for SB

Ashburn (Feb. 22, 2011) - Don't let the Stone Bridge High School girls basketball team's powder blue uniforms or bevy of speedy guards fool you ... this team is 23-3 on the season because of a blue-collar attitude and the Bulldogs had the bruises to show for it after a bruising, 43-30, win over Hayfield in the Northern Region first round.

Sophomore Murielle Tiernan and senior Cori Prince each scored 13 points to lead the Bulldogs that trailed early in the second half, 18-17, before re-establishing a 6-point lead by the end of the third quarter and then gradually pulling away down the stretch. Stone Bridge will host Robinson on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Freshman Megan Della-Penna, gaining confidence as the season progresses, put Stone Bridge ahead for good, 19-18, with a pair of free throws with 4:20 to go in the third. Tiernan, working hard on the boards against a strong inside Hawks team, put back a miss to make it 21-18.

Hayfield got back to within a point on a nice drive by Taylor Jewett but Prince hit one of her three 3-pointers in the game to make it 24-20 with 2:47 left in the third. While Hayfield's 6-foot-2 Shannen Cochrahan was able to post up for two of her team-high 10 points, the Bulldogs -- back by a boisterous home crowd -- finished the quarter strong with Della-Penna finishing another offensive rebound and then Prince turning a steal into a layin for a 28-22 lead going into the final quarter.

Midway through the final quarter, Hayfield stuck close, down by just four, 32-28, after back-to-back Cochrahan buckets but the Stone Bridge fullcourt pressure started to wear on the Hawks and Stone Bridge forced Hayfield to send them to the line where Stone Bridge shot 7 of 13 in the final four minutes.

Prince's sister, sophomore Nicole Prince, provided a spark down the stretch, getting to the line for a free throw and then with a nice assist to Tiernan on the press break. When Stone Bridge went into a well-designed stall, Hayfield spent more than a minute chasing the Bulldogs and then when they overplayed the guards up top, Tiernan went backdoor and made a basket for an And-One opportunity that made it Stone Bridge, 38-28, with 1:41 left.

If it wasn't for a Hayfield jumper in the waning seconds, Stone Bridge would have held the Hawks without a field goal in the five and half minutes of the contest.

Stone Bridge 43, Hayfield 30
Hayfield (11-13): Cochrahan 10, Reives 7, Jewett 6, Smith 4, Abulencia 3.
Stone Bridge (23-3): CPrince 3, Tiernan 13, Della-Penna 8, NPrince 5, Guzek 4.

Football: Stone Bridge Standout Gouveia to Play at James Madison

Photo copyright by Craig Sterbutzel/Fat Boy Photos 2010
Ashburn (Feb. 22, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School senior Kyle Gouveia, an all-around leader for the Bulldogs back-to-back runs to the VHSL Division 5 state title game, has committed to play football next year at James Madison University.

Gouveia becomes the fifth Bulldog to commit, joining teammates Rob Burns (Virginia), John Cheritis (Washington and Lee), Calvin Hollenhorst (Coastal Carolina) and Spenser Rositano (Boston College).

The recruiting process between Gouveia and James Madison happened late and rather quickly according to the Bulldog in an interview Tuesday as he said the school asked him to make a visit on Saturday and then an offer was made and accepted. The Dukes envision Gouveia, a linebacker in high school, as a safety in college.

"I'm excited, playing defense is what I love," said Gouveia, who also played offense and special teams for Stone Bridge. "I've always been more a defensive kind of guy."

Boys Basketball: Park View's Ryan McCarter Nets 1,000 Point, Leads Patriots into D3 Regionals

Sterling (Feb. 22, 2011) Park View High School’s dynamic junior guard, Ryan McCarter, scored his 1,000 point of his career last week in the Dulles District boys basketball semifinals against Potomac Falls. While McCarter and his Patriots fell in that contest, they advance to the Region II Division 3 quarterfinals as the No. 6 seed with a trip to Jefferson District tournament champion Charlottesville Wednesday.

McCarter sat at 999 points when he netted a 3-point shot in the second quarter vs. the Panthers to surpass the 1,000-point milestone.

McCarter reached a 1,000 in two and a half seasons on varsity ball. He was called up to the varsity midway through his freshmen year and scored 19 points in his third game as he first displayed his trademark poise and calm in big games.

Since then, according to Patriot coach Mike Koscinski, McCarter has been nothing short of sensational.

This season, McCarter is averaging 22 points per game, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game and has 70 steals on the season.

“Ryan has had to adjust his game each year depending on the needs of our team. We have depended on him greatly this season to help control the boards on both ends of the floor and he has stepped up to the challenge by grabbing over 190 rebounds this season,” said Koscinski.

Added Koscinski: “Ryan draws the toughest defensive assignment each night and also has to guard the opponents best man on a nightly basis. Teams have played him real physical and bodied him up and he has had to adjust how he scores. When Ryan is on, his teammates understand that it opens the floor for everyone else to thrive. He constantly gets the attention of several defenders on every possession and he has never backed down to a challenge.

At the conclusion of the Dulles District tournament, McCarter’s career mark sits at 1,034 points.

Basketball: Loudoun County Girls and Potomac Falls Boys Defend Dulles District Tournament Titles

Loudoun County's Erica Linnemann and Alex Lapple postgame

Purcellville (Feb. 19, 2011) - Both the Loudoun County girls and the Potomac Falls boys opened strong Friday night and defended their Dulles District basketball tournament titles at Woodgrove High School.

Loudoun County trailed only in the opening minute of the opener before taking a commanding, 32-12, halftime lead and then held off a ferocious Freedom comeback to collect the Raiders third tournament title in four years -- all against Freedom -- with the 54-49 win.

In the second game, before a packed house, Potomac Falls never trailed and led by 14 in the first quarter and 22 at the half on the way to a 73-55 victory over surprise finalist, No. 7 seed Woodgrove.

Potomac Falls' Pete Simoneau and Zach Curran postgame

Both Loudoun County and Potomac Falls were also regular-season champions.

In the first game it the fourth straight year that Loudoun County (21-4) and Freedom (18-7) were meeting in the finals. While high-scoring senior Brittany Batts was held scoreless in the first quarter, the Raiders still jumped out to a 12-6 lead behind juniors Alex Lapple and Erica Linnemann, who combined for 10 of their 22 points in the quarter.

Batts heated up in the second quarter with seven points and center Casey Cummings, who had a team-high 14 points, scored five including a 3-pointer as the Raiders went up by 19 points at the break.

Held to one field goal in the first half, Freedom senior Dionna Scott broke loose in the third quarter, scoring eight of her game-high 19 points, and Freedom made a valiant charge at the Raiders, holding County to just four points in the quarters.

Cummings had some key baskets in the fourth quarter as Freedom's comeback fell a couple of baskets short.

In the boys game, Potomac Falls (24-1) got a scoring boost in the opening quarter from a pair of senior guards who don't normally carry the scoring load as Zach Curran and Pete Simoneau each hit a pair of 3-pointers. Curran finished with 13 and Simoneau had 11.

The Panthers had four players in double figures with Greg Graves, very strong in the fourth quarter after Woodgrove (10-15) had made a run to get within 13 points going into the final quarter, finishing with 18 points and Brendon Chesson scored 11. The Panthers leading scorer Lukas Mihailovich only scored eight points but did a nice job defensively, with tight defense on Wolverine junior Brad Gilson, and some nice work on the boards.

Gilson, displaying a smooth stroke with his long range jumper, finished with 23 and teammate Brett Danielson scored 11.

Potomac Falls will host district rival Broad Run on Tuesday in the Region II Division 4 quarterfinals and Woodgrove will host a Division 3 quarterfinal, the loser of Charlottesville vs. Monticello in the Jefferson District finals.
