Purcellville (Oct. 29, 201) - It was only fitting that a senior would steal the show in Loudoun Valley's 49-21 home victory over Heritage Oct. 29, considering the Vikings honored their senior class prior to the game.
Valley senior Kevin Wiley broke loose for a 33-yard touchdown run just over a minute into Friday's game. And that was just the start of things to come. Wiley totaled 266 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the night, averaging nearly 10 yards per carry.
"We came into the game fired up," said Wiley, also a standout linebacker. "We knew if we executed, we could win. Our O-line has been stepping their game up. We told them we are going to go right behind you and just keep pushing and pushing."
The Vikings (2-1 in the Cedar Run District, 7-2 overall) are in the midst of their best season since 2005 when they won the AAA National District and earned a playoff berth. Third-year Valley coach Danny McGrath credits the senior class with returning the program to prominence.
"This is a special class," McGrath said. "These guys had visions of getting this program to be competitive, getting this program back into the playoffs. And we are continuing to do that."
Wiley has seen the Vikings steadily improve since posting consecutive 2-8 records in 2007 and 2008. Valley was 6-4 in 2009.
"It's been great," Wiley said of the turnaround. "Coming out my sophomore year, we weren't good at all. We just weren't as a team, we were just individuals playing. Last year, we started bringing it together and then this year, we are playing as a team."
Heritage (0-3, 1-8) fought back valiantly after falling behind 21-0 in the first quarter. The Pride closed the gap to 28-21 in the third quarter before the Vikings scored the game's final 21 points. Heritage junior QB Austin Nelson racked up 342 yards to easily surpass the 2,000-yard plateau with 2,334 passing yards on the season. Nelson connected twice with Chuck Carlin for touchdowns and found Drew Burkhard for another score.
Senior Kyle Flinton hauled in seven receptions to set the Pride's single-season record with 43 receptions for 523 yards.
Loudoun Valley senior QB Andrew Taylor passed for a touchdown and ran for another score in the win. Senior David Mellstrom caught six balls for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Junior Donald Devine also had a big night, churning out 136 rushing yards and scoring twice. Devine and Wiley combined for 402 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
The Vikings appear to be safely in the six-team Northwest Region, Division 5 playoff mix with one game remaining. Valley closes out the regular season at Battlefield on Nov. 6.
"It looks like we are headed for an 11th game," McGrath said. "Now, it's about how much better can we become before that 11th game. Everything from here on out is part of that process."

Football: Stone Bridge Mauls McLean, 38-0, in Match-up of 8-0 Teams
By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun Editor
(Oct. 29, 2010) - The Stone Bridge High School football team played a nearly flawless first half Friday as the Bulldogs mauled McLean for 38 points before the break in a match-up of teams with 8-0 records. With Marcus Harris rushing for three scores and 124 of his 161 yards, Stone Bridge left no doubt as to the top team in the Liberty District as well as Division 5 in the Northern Region if not the state.
The Bulldog defense, led by sophomore Jonathan Allen who had three sacks to add to his school record 13 on the season, held McLean to 38 yards in the first half and one first down -- all of which came on one trick play. The Bulldogs had probably their hardest-hitting game of the season, laying some vicious blocks, especially on a 53-yard punt return by Spenser Rositano that set up a 12-yard Harris TD run.
Harris had started the game with a 44-yard TD sprint as Stone Bridge opened by moving the ball 61 yards in just three plays to take a 7-0 lead only 40 seconds into the contest. After a 3-and-out, Stone Bridge marched 51 yards in nine efficient plays with Harris moving the chains almost every time he touched the ball and he finished off the drive by walking in from the 2 to make it 14-0 with 6:09 left in the first.
After Rositano's punt return -- during which Allen and another Stone Bridge player sent Highlanders flinging with big blocks -- Harris took the next snap and made it 21-0 with 39 seconds left in the first.
After an Allen sack pinned McLean inside their 20, Rositano returned a short punt 23 yards to put the ball on the McLean 24 and Brian Rody (154 yards passing on 11-23-0) hit Harris for a 9-yard pass play that then set up a 15-yard inside reverse to Adrian Thomas to make it 28-0 Stone Bridge with 10:05 still left in the first half.
McLean finally got a first down when they executed a trick play on 3rd-and-17 from their own 18 with Jimmy Ludwick taking a draw handoff from behind his back from quarterback Chase Mills. Ludwick stood frozen, almost a variation on the old Statue of Liberty play, with the ball held behind him as several Bulldogs rushed by and then he went 38 yards for McLean's biggest play of the night.
After the Bulldog defense held at their own 36 on 4th-and-2, the Bulldogs went to the spread offense with Rody completing passes to three different receivers before he did the honors from the 1 for a 35-0 with 4:03 left in the half.
Stone Bridge wasted nothing in the half as the Bulldogs turned a McLean fumble on their own 38 with 16 second left in the first half into a 38-0 lead on the strength of Rositano's school record-tying 48-yard field goal. A booming kick that was probably good from at least 53 yards.
With the clock running in the second half because of the VHSL 35-point blowout rule, Stone Bridge made the game go even faster with a monster drive of 16 plays, that included 19 snaps with three penalties, that drained more than 10 minutes off the clock. Even though the drive stalled at the McLean 1, the field position was enough to keep the Highlanders off the scoreboard, even though the Stone Bridge second defense took to the field in the final quarter.
Stone Bridge improves to 6-0 and 9-0 and has wrapped up at least a share of the Liberty District title for a sixth straight year and the Bulldogs can claim a sixth 10-0 regular season in eight years with a win next week at South Lakes. McLean, off to its best start in 25 years, slips to 5-1 and 8-1.

Volleyball: Ideal Senior Night for Pride as Heritage Sweeps Battlefield
By Owen Gotimer
Heritage High School student journalist
Leesburg (Oct. 29, 2010) - Early this week the varsity volleyball team at Heritage High School clinched the Cedar Run District regular season title. Thursday night the Pride ended their regular season district play with an undefeated record (8-0 in district, 18-2 overall), defeating the Battlefield Bobcats in three games.
Heritage got out to an 8-1 lead early on in game one. After that it was smooth sailing for the Pride as they won 25-8.
A quick lead was once again established in game two as the Pride’s offense was becoming more and more dominant. Pride senior starter Lian Bernett lead Heritage’s attack with 8 kills, 3 points, 2 aces, 1 assist, and 5 digs. Assisted by teammates Kelsey Hrebenach (8 kills, 5 points, 1 ace) and Stephanie Yokoyama (17 points, 6 aces, 28 assists, 7 digs), the Bobcat’s defense could not keep up. The Pride won game two, 25-15.
There was a scare for Heritage midway through game three as they allowed Battlefield to crawl back into a 3-point game. Nevertheless, the determined Pride fought strong taking an overwhelming lead through solid defense and terrific service.
The Pride’s service game was lead by Yokoyama (17 points, 6 aces), freshman Sydney Busa (6 points, 3 aces), junior Christina Kamis (6 points, 3 aces), and senior Emma LeMaitre (6 points, 2 aces). Every Pride starter had at least one ace, combining for a team total 18 aces. Heritage won game three, 25-13.
And to think the night could not get any better; it was also Heritage’s senior night. This season the Pride volleyball team will graduate three seniors including outside hitter Lian Bernett, outside hitter Emma LeMaitre, and libero Rachel Runyan. In the fall, LeMaitre will attend Central Connecticut State, and Runyan will attend Radford. Bernett is undecided, but plans on attending either Coastal Carolina or the College of Charleston. Heritage’s Coach Keilty wishes the seniors the best of luck and added that all three girls will be greatly missed.
The winner of Monday’s game between Battlefield and Osbourn, at Stonewall Jackson, will play the tope seed Pride next Tuesday at Heritage at 7 p.m.
Game Stats:
Lian Bernett - 8 kills, 3 points, 2 aces, 1 assist, 5 digs
Sydney Busa - 5 kills, 4 assisted blocks, 6 points, 3 aces, 1 assist, 1 dig
Madeline Fowler - 5 kills, 6 points, 1 ace, 1 assist, 4 digs
Kelsey Hrebenach - 8 kills, 5 points, 1 ace
Christina Kamis - 5 kills, 1 assisted block, 6 points, 3 aces, 1 dig
Emma LeMaitre - 6 points, 2 aces, 1 assist, 7 digs
Dariel Montanez - 4 digs
Lesley Reed - 3 digs
Rachel Runyan - 1 kill, 7 digs
Stephanie Yokoyama - 17 points, 6 aces, 28 assists, 7 digs

News: Loudoun County Public Schools 2010-11 Enrollment Figures Show Newest Schools Growing Fastest
(Oct. 29, 2010) - The Loudoun County Public Schools enrollment figures for 2010-11, as based on the Sept. 30 enrollment count taken annually, shows that the county's two high schools opened in 2005 -- Briar Woods and Freedom -- have become two of the largest and that the two newest high schools -- Tuscarora and Woodgrove -- will soon have more students than the high schools it primarily drew students from -- Heritage and Loudoun Valley.
Freedom at 1,816 students trails only Stone Bridge (1,917) in enrollment. Briar Woods is the fourth largest currently at 1,600 students, some 83 less than neighbor Broad Run. All four of those schools draw from a midcounty section of Loudoun running from South Riding in the south up through Brambleton, Broadlands, Ashburn to Lansdowne.
Freedom and Broad Run are slated to join Stone Bridge at the AAA level in the next two-year cycle that starts in 2011-12. Briar Woods will be one of the largest AA schools in the state, especially if you look at the school's two youngest classes and project enrollment out.
Tuscarora opened with 1,097 students and Woodgrove has 1,104 students. Those new schools lowered student population dramatically at two schools that have to play this entire school year in the larger AAA classification for athletics -- Heritage at 1,327 and Loudoun Valley at 1,338.
Looking at the fact that Tuscarora has 823 students in freshman and sophomore classes combined and Woodgrove 753, these new schools will quickly catch up to Heritage (565 underclassmen) and Loudoun Valley (515).
If Heritage and Loudoun Valley were in the smaller classification AA Dulles District this season for athletics, the two schools would be roughly the same size as Dominion (1,335) and Park View (1,327) and smaller than Briar Woods, Broad Run, Freedom, Loudoun County (1,411) and Potomac Falls (1,504).

Volleyball: Sister Act! Dominion Has Three Sets of Sisters on Floor Tonight

| While they aren't all from the same family ... the Titans have three sets of sisters on the floor tonight! |

Football: Beat the LoCo Experts - Week Nine Winners - 3 Fans Go 9-0! Play Week 10!
(Oct. 28, 2010) - The stakes are higher than ever in our Beat the LoCo Experts football picks contest as we actually have t-shirts -- real, not imaginary, mind you -- to give away to our winners each week.
Heck, we are so dang proud of our new t-shirts that we are giving one away to each of the three fans that went 9-0 last week - Clay of Sterling, Easy E of Sterling and ValleyVikes2011 of Lovettsville ... congrats to all three!
The overall winner of our contest will win $100! To date, Michael of Ashburn now sits alone in first, just one game ahead of Sam of Ashburn.
And Michael of Ashburn is one game better than our top expert, Moe Murphy of Clarke County Sports, who leads VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa by one game. Two weeks left in the regular season and then we will keep playing in the postseason. To play in Week 10, simply fill out the form below and submit.
The fine print: Chain gang guys who misbehave may not play the contest ... t-shirts may be resold on ebay for top dollar but not on Craig's List ... Anybody dressing up as the VivaLoudoun "Fox" for Halloween and sends us a photo to prove it, will win a free t-shirt ... Anybody dressing up as VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa for Halloween and sends us a photo to prove it, will receive free therapy ... 9 out of 10 sportswriter's spouses play this contest ... how can a new school have a "Homecoming" if there isn't anybody yet old enough to "come home" ... just asking.

Volleyball: Woodgrove Dig Pink Event Scores Big for Fight Against Breast Cancer
(Oct. 28, 2010) - The first inaugural Dig Pink event for Woodgrove High School was held last Thursday as the Wolverines hosted fellow first-year school Tuscarora. Although the Dulles District match went to Tuscarora, the big winners were the Side-Out Foundation and the fight against breast cancer as Woodgrove is estimating that it will double its $1,500 fundraising goal.
"Many sincere thanks to the multitudes involved in making this event a tremendous success," reported Woodgrove volleyball coach Faisal Hallaj.
Woodgrove volleyball parents donated their time, talents and tons of decorations and supplies to dress out the gymnasiums for the evening, set up for the bake sale, gift baskets, 50/50, flower sales, t-shirt sales and more.
"Special thanks to Mrs. Julie Wernle for all her time and effort as the event coordinator. Her vision, passion, and ability to pull an amazing workforce together, made this event one to remember," wrote Hallaj. "The success of the fundraising efforts would not have been possible without donations from Sugardust Cookies and Cake, Sky High Designs, Belt-It, Bloom, Ben Franklin, Party City, Giant Foods, Play-It Again Sports, McDonald’s and Michael's."
Special guest announcers Janet Emma Garbe and Woodgrove High School's own Sarah Ellis emceed the program's events, and Hallaj gave a very moving presentation before the varsity match.
"Thank you to the many, many Dig Pink attendees from our student body and community, a very heartfelt thank you for spending the evening with us and opening your hearts and wallets for the Side-Out Foundation," said Hallaj. "Again, thank you from the Woodgrove High School volleyball program for supporting breast cancer awareness, compassion care, patient services and research by "Digging Pink"."

News: Tornado Watch and High Wind Advisory for Area Tonight

News: VivaLoudoun T-Shirts Have Arrived -- Donate and Get One Today!
| Get a couple of these cool t-shirts and start your own VivaLoudoun T-shirt Party! |
A big thanks for Cheers Sports for printing up these T's that come in sizes from Adult small to XL with even some 2XL and 3XL thrown in for good measure.
Dan, how can I get one of these t-shirts?
Answer: Great question ... you could win one of our contests such as the Beat the LoCo Experts football picks game or you could spot VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa (that is me!) out at a game and whisper the "Word of the Day" to him (it was Amigo last week!) ... or you can donate to help fund VivaLoudoun's coverage of youth and high school sports in Loudoun and we will send you a t-shirt!
Dan, how can I donate to VivaLoudoun?
Simply hit the Donate button on the right side of our homepage and follow the easy instructions from PayPal ... VivaLoudoun is not a non-profit (though our bank account says otherwise!) so your donation is not tax-deductible but if you donate $25 we will send you a t-shirt and if you donate $50 you can grab two t-shirts! Donate $100 and the VivaLoudoun Fox will put you in our Hall of Fame of supporters (building not built yet but we are designing a page!) ...
Dan, you have been promising t-shirts forever, what took so long!?!
Another good question ... almost as if I am writing these questions ... let look at the history of our t-shirt development ...
Early Stages: little known fact is that among the discovery of the Cro-Magnon man artifacts were cave paintings that included hunt scenes, family scenes as well as VivaLoudoun early t-shirt drawings ...
Delayed Shipment: Our first shipment of t-shirts from overseas was accidentally thrown overboard in the Boston Harbor in 1773 ... Samuel Adams was heard to exclaim: "I said to dump the tea! Not the T's!"
First Prototypes: Our first t-shirt designer, H. Ford was working on an early model of the T when he got frustrated and started moonlighting designing cars instead ...
Pent-up Demand: In the 1950s, the clamor was so great to get our t-shirts printed that Doris Day sung about it in "(VivaLoudoun) T-(Shirts) For Two"
Finally: Residents around the country started meeting in groups to talk about the soon to be released t-shirts ... VivaLoudoun "T parties" they were called ... we think they talked about politics when they got bored?!?
... And now the t-shirts have arrived! Get yours today ...

*In softball, Stone Bridge's Cori Prince will play next year at George Mason and Potomac Falls pitcher, Heather Kiefer, who verbally committed last February to James Madison, will officially sign in a ceremony on Nov. 12.
*And in basketball, former Stone Bridge and Flint Hill standout, K.C. Whitaker, who is playing a postgraduate year at the Fishburne Military School this year, has verbally committed to play next year at NCAA Division I University of Alabama-Birmingham.

He also became the school's athletic director in 1997 and remained AD until leaving for Heritage High School in Leesburg in 2002. This year Trenary moved to Woodgrove.
As Clakre's AD, Trenary started the school's wrestling program as well as JV softball and girls JV soccer. He also developed Clarke's academic monitoring program for athletes and he developed the athlete drug testing program. Trenary turned the Clarke County Track Invitational into a top notch meet with 20 schools and, along with Frank Jurney, he started the Berryville Bluegrass series that helped bring in almost $20,000 yearly for the athletic program and athletic scholarships.
He helped in every phase of building the current football stadium, from working with contractors, to painting, planting grass seed, putting up the fence, and even having his football players pick up and remove rocks from the field.

Leesburg (Oct. 25, 2010) - Broad Run High School freshman Da'Qwan Earl took the opening kickoff Friday back 87 yards for a touchdown and the Spartans never looked back as they defeated Loudoun County, 37-18.

The win improved the Spartans to 4-1 in the Dulles District and 8-1 overall while the Raiders dropped to 1-3 and 3-5. The only blemish on Broad Run's record is a loss at Briar Woods, which ended the Spartans two-year plus winning streak.
Broad Run piled up 258 yards rushing while County was held to minus-25, with Broad Run sacking Raider quarterback Jake Lokey eight times in the contest. Lokey did manage to toss two touchdowns and run for another while throwing for 257 yards on 16 of 36 passing.
Derril Thomas (104 yards), Kevin Taggart (74 yards) and Earl (62 yards) all scored rushing TDs for Broad Run and Joe Walter returned an interception for a score.

Football: Briar Woods Clinches a Share of First Dulles District Title with 24-10 Win Over Park View
Ashburn (Oct. 24, 2010) - Briar Woods High School quarterback Trace McSorley threw two touchdown passes in a two-minute span at the end of the third quarter Friday to lead the Falcons to a 24-10 win over Park View and clinch at least a share of the school's first ever AA Dulles District football title.
The Falcons (7-2 overall, 5-0 in district) can clinch the title by themselves in two weeks when they travel to Dominion to finish the regular-season after a bye next week. The Patriots fall to 3-5 and 2-2.
Briar Woods led just 10-3 at the half on a Michael Brownlee 3-yard TD run -- his first score of the year after missing most of the season because of an injury on the first play in the first game -- and David Clements 36-yard field goal. The Patriots got on the board in the final minute of the half on Wilfredo Avila's 26-yard field goal.
The upset-minded Patriots then tied the contest, 10-10, midway through the third quarter when Ryan McCarter caught a 29-yard TD pass from Alec Dombkowski.
After the two teams traded punts, McSorley hooked up with Scott Rolin on a 57-yard TD pass to put the Falcons up, 17-10, wi5th 2:10 left in the third quarter. A Justin Baker sack on third down pinned Park View back on their own 14 on the next series and after a punt, McSorley found Alex Carter for a 52-yard score that sealed the victory.
The Patriots moved to the Falcon 11 late in the fourth quarter but the BWoods defense forced four straight incomplete passes to take over on downs with just under four minutes to play. The Patriots once again drove inside the Red Zone, this time to the 14 with just over a minute to go but DeVontae O'Bannion's interception ended the threat.
McSorley is on pace to throw for 6,000-plus yards in his career as he has 1,478 yards in his first eight varsity games as a freshman on 116 of 203 passing with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Carter, Rolin and Cameron Serigne have combined for 96 receptions and 1,278 yards on the season.

Football: Freedom Wins First Ever District Contest, Snapping 23-Game String with 26-19 Win at Potomac Falls
Sterling (Oct. 24, 2010) - The Freedom High School football team not only tied the school mark for victories in a season with a 26-19 win at Potomac Falls on Friday night but the victory was the Eagles first ever Dulles District win, snapping a 23-game string of losses, as they improved to 4-4 overall.
While Freedom went 4-6 in 2006, the first year they went to a varsity schedule, including wins over Briar Woods and Loudoun County, the Eagles did not play a district schedule and the past three seasons Freedom has struggled, going 3-27 overall.
Second-year coach Mick Mullins, however, has been rebuilding the program, going 2-8 last year after just one win in the previous two campaigns, and now 4-4 overall with a 1-3 district mark.
The Eagles, stunning the Panthers on their Homecoming by scoring on the first play of the game with a 67-yard touchdown pass from Matt Malacane to Gerson Rodriguez, rolled to a 19-0 lead early in the game and then a shocking 26-6 halftime lead, especially since Freedom hand't scored 26 points total in a district contest since 2007.
After the early strike, Freedom's defense made it 9-0 with a saftey and then the Eagles used an 11-play drive to set up a 22-yard field goal by Jeff Denfeld to make ti 12-0 with 38 seconds left in the first quarter.
Malacane, who finished with 218 yards passing on 7 of 10 throwing, was at it again in the second quarter, this time hooking up with Derek Burns on an 80-yard touchdown that made it 19-0.
Potomac Falls showed some life with John Fishchetti throwing the first of this three TD's on the night, this one a 25-yarder to Nicholas Fernandez to cut into the lead but Freedom went on another long drive, this time 66 yards on nine plays with Malacane throwing his third TD of the night, a 22-yarder to Chuck Thompson to make it 26-6 with 3:03 left in the half.
Freedom would not score again and needed to hang on as Fischetti combined with Garrett Streich for two touchdown passes in the final six minutes of the game. The last TD made it 26-19 with just over two minutes to play. The Panthers held on defense and forced Freedom punt deep in their own end but the Eagles came up with their third interception of the game -- Joel Pugh, Will McGlaughlin and Chris Cook all had picks -- to ice the game.

Football: Stone Bridge Put Fumbles Behind Them, Roll Past Langley, 50-10, to Improve to 8-0
By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun Editor
Ashburn (Oct. 23, 2010) - There are many ways that the undefeated Stone Bridge High School football team can beat you, especially with multi-threat talents on the roster such as seniors Marcus Harris, Kyle Gouveia, Brian Rody and Spenser Rositano.
After Friday's 50-10 AAA Liberty District Homecoming win over Langley the Bulldogs improved to 5-0 in district and 8-0 overall, but the Stone Bridge coaching staff was left concerned about the ways the team -- which coughed up three fumbles in the first quarter and made key penalties during the entire evening -- could ultimately beat themselves in the playoffs.
"I saw plenty of positives tonight but against good teams you can't have the turnovers and penalties," said Stone Bridge coach Mickey Thompson which has his team just two wins away from an 8th consecutive district title and from the school's sixth undefeated regular season in eight years.
The one constant for Stone Bridge has been a defensive unit that has been lights out in 2010, allowing just two touchdowns against the first unit in eight games and is giving up an average of 5.4 points per game.
"The key for us is that we are playing really good defense and that has been covering up some inconsistencies on offense," said Thompson.
The Bulldog defense -- with Rositano intercepting two passes in the first quarter to help offset the fumbles; Gouveia taking an interception back for a touchdown in the second quarter and generally flying around the field the entire night and laying teeth-rattling hits on the Saxons; and the defensive line, led by sophomore Jonathan Allen, pressured Saxon quarterback Braden Anderson with six sacks, five in the first half -- has Stone Bridge squarely in position to capture a seventh Northern Region Division 5 title.

Football: McGrath's Vikings Spoil His Alma Mater's Homecoming as Valley Beats Herndon, 35-14
Herndon (Oct. 23, 2010) - Loudoun Valley High School varsity football coach Danny McGrath was honored before Herndon's Homecoming game Saturday with the 2000 Herndon graduate handed a Hornets jersey, but once the game started it was all Viking green as McGrath's men used a big first quarter to spoil Herndon' special day, 35-14.
The non-district win improved Loudoun Valley to 6-2 on the season and fortified their AAA Northwest Region Division 5 playoff position. It also assured the Vikings of a second straight winning season as the team went 6-4 last season and just missed the playoffs after struggling to a 1-9 record in McGrath's first year in Purcellville.
"We would love to be 8-0 right now but we will take 6-2," said McGrath, who at 27 years old is still one of the youngest head coaches in the state.
Valley didn't waste any time in taking the large Herndon Homecoming crowd out of the contest as the Vikes recovered a squib kickoff to start the game and needed just five plays for junior Donald Devine to take it over from the 1.
On Herndon's next series, Loudoun Valley senior R.J. Allison stepped in front of a receiver, picking off the ball, and racing 57 yards for a score to make it 14-0. Allison wasn't done as he did it again on Herndon's next possession, this time returning the ball 40 yards before being brought down at the Hornet 9.
Valley couldn't take advantage as the Vikes fumbled the ball away but after the defense held and forced good field position, the Vikings needed just three plays to score again, this time as senior quarterback found senior David Mellstrom all alone on the post pattern for a 39-yard touchdown as time ran out in the first quarter, making it 21-0 Valley.
Herndon fought back with a nice drive in the second quarter to make it 21-7 and Valley kept the Hornets in the contest as Taylor was picked off in the end zone with less than two minutes to go in the first half and then the Vikes fumbled the ball on their own 24 on the second play of the second half.
"I was here two years ago for Homecoming on a Saturday against Westfield and Westfield kept Herndon in the game and then lost in overtime. I was thinking about that game," said McGrath.
The Viking defense was up to the task as they forced a fumble on 4th-and-1 on their own 14 and then had to do it again after Herndon drove all the way to the Viking 3 where they had 1st-and-goal, this time senior Kevin Wiley stripped a ballcarrier and senior Allen Beam recovered at the 7.
Having just face the prospect of a 21-14 game, the Vikings went up by three scores as Wiley took a handoff around the right end, broke a tackle and raced 87 yards up the sidelines to make it 28-7.
After Herndon cut the lead to 28-14, Valley put together a time-consuming 12-play, 65-yard drive that was a mixture of Devine and Wiley running and Taylor throwing to Mellstrom and junior Harrison Jackson.
After a holding penalty had the Vikes facing 2nd-and-23 from the Herndon 31, Taylor hooked up with Jackson for the final score of the afternoon.
After the game, one Vikings assistant told the player: "It smells like playoffs" and McGrath said he not only wants to get his team to the playoffs but be successful in the playoffs. If Valley does punch their playoff ticket, it will be the school's first return to the playoffs since 2005.
And Homecoming turned out to be special for McGrath as he told his players: "What made today special for me today was being on the visitor's sidelines with this group."
