Lacrosse: Loudoun Valley Girls Capture Third Straight Regional Title, Valley Boys Stung by Yellowjackets

Purcellville (May 29, 2010) - The Loudoun Valley High School girls lacrosse team claimed its third consecutive AAA Northwest Region title on Friday with a 16-12 victory over Cedar Run District rival Battlefield.

The Vikings senior tri-captains -- Shannon Harkey, Morgan Becker and Sophie Swan -- led Valley (16-2) to the win by combining for 12 goals and six assists. Sophomore Maggie Beglau made her first start of the season in goal for the Vikes and made nine saves.

The Loudoun Valley boys were not able to make it twin titles on the night as Osbourn Park scored a late goal to stun the Vikes, 9-8.

Valley senior tri-captains Shannon Harkey, Morgan Becker and Sophie Swan after Friday's regional title win

It was an emotional win for the Loudoun Valley girls that had to play after the dismissal from the team earlier in the day of two keys players -- a first team all-district senior attack and the starting junior goalie, a second team all-district selection -- for unspecified violations.

The Vikings had plenty of firepower to handle the Bobcats for a fourth time this season -- with 14-5 and 12-9 regular season wins and a 15-6 win in the district title game -- as Becker, Harkey, Swan and Andrea Mustacchio have all scored more than 50 points on the season.

Harkey finished Friday with six goals and three assists to give her 52 goals and 39 assists on the season. Becker added four goals and two assists and now has 38 and 27 total. Swan scored twice with an assist to give her 37 goals and 22 assists total. Mustachio finished with two goals and two assists to giver her 35 goals and 21 assists on the year.

The four players combined have 162 goals and 109 assists on the season and prevent teams from keying defensively on just one Viking scorer.

Valley was also good in this title game when the ball was loose as 12 Vikes combined to control 22 ground balls.

In the boys game, Osbourn Park had never beaten Loudoun Valley but the Yellowjackets took control with two goals in the final minute of a then scoreless first quarter.

It took Valley until the third quarter to catch up with Denis Radcliffe scoring early to make it 4-4 and then Matt McGuinness put the Vikes up for the first time, 5-4, with 6:30 left in the quarter. OP's Nick Leporatti tied it back up with 1:37 to play in the quarter but Valley went back ahead, 6-5, on Chris Rabung's score with 34 seconds left before the fourth.

OP retook the lead in the fourth with two goals in just over a minute span with Matt Reichard of OP give the Yellowjackets the 7-6 lead with 8:26 left in the contest. Leporatti then scored with 7:13 to go for a 2-goal cushion.

The Vikes looked as if they would finish strong for a comeback as Tyler Ikwild scored from a McGuinness assist with 6:07 left and then Syracuse bound-Chris Daddio found the back of the net to tie the game with just under five minutes to play.

Valley had possession with less than two minutes to play but turned the ball over and OP, which had shown a good transition game all night, quickly moved the ball down the field with Devin Bushweller rifling a shot on the run with 1:12 left for the 9-8 OP lead. Seconds later Valley got off a final shot attempt from the outside that was easily handled by the OP goalie and the Yellowjackets were able to run the clock out on their end and a wild celebration was set off after the final horn as parents and students joined the OP team on the field to soak up the big win.

(May 28, 2010) - Thursday night at Freedom High School had four Dulles District championships games but only two champions crowned in complete contests as one hellacious  storm slammed into South Riding ending Loudoun County baseball's hopes of a comeback against Broad Run and creating a unique co-championship between Broad Run and Potomac Falls boys soccer.

Before the storm, however, Briar Woods claimed its second straight district tournament title with a 1-0 win over Park View on Macy Jones' 1-hitter, and Broad Run won a fourth straight district title with a 4-0 win over Loudoun County. Broad Run baseball was ahead of LC, 11-6, in the bottom of the fifth inning when lightning halted the game for good and the Spartans and Panthers boys soccer teams were stuck in a scoreless game in the second half. While the baseball was official since 4.5 innings had been played, district officials had to be granted permission from the VHSL to allow the soccer game end as a tie rather than continuing it Friday or Saturday.

Track and Field: PF's Nicole Fauteux, PV's Dennis April Lead Area Athletes at Region II Meet

(May 28, 2010) - Park View High School's Dennis April and Potomac Falls' Nicole Fauteux both won two individual events at Thursday's Region II track and field meet and helped the Patriot boys finish second and Panther girls fourth.

Fauteux was first in the 100 hurdles with a 15.45, some 0.16 faster than second place. Also qualifying for the AA state meet in the 100H was Jessica Fedderson of Broad Run in 4th (16.14). Fauteux then ran a 45.48 in the 300 hurdles, almost two seconds faster than Kiya Day of Dominion, the runner-up at 47.26.

Park View's Meredith Oare won the discus at 113-01 with Broad Run's Kearisten Jones 2nd (105-00) and PF's Jenn Richards 4th (103-06). Jones was 4th in shot (33-04.00) and Richards 6th (32-07.50).

Area boys had a great afternoon highlighted by Park View with April first in the 100 meters at 11:06 and teammate Nathan Santana 4th at 11.34. Dominion's Derrick Lewis placed 6th at 11.35.

April also won the 200 at 22.23 with Lewis 5th at 23.09 and he was fourth in the long jump (21-00.00) while running a leg on the Park View winning 4x100 relay along with Santana, Daryus Beale and Takim Gayle (42.52). Soccer: Stone Bridge Boys, Girls Shutout Foes in Regional Quarterfinals

(May 28, 2010) - The Stone Bridge High School boys and girls soccer teams turned up the defense Thursday night in the AAA Northern Region quarterfinals, shutting out their opponents to advance to the semifinals and one win away from clinching state bids. The Bulldog girls blanked Lee, 3-0, at home, while the Bulldog boys went on the road and blanked Lake Braddock, 2-0, in a game played at South County. Both games were moved up to 6 p.m. starts and avoided the severed weather that stormed through the area later.

The Skinny on Wednesday's Playoffs: Valley Girls, Boys Lax Clinch State Bids; Valley Softball, Baseball Win District Titles; and More

(May 27, 2010) - It was a night of celebration and heartache Wednesday in the playoffs as Loudoun Valley High School saw its boys and girls lacrosse teams clinch state tournament bids and advance to the regional finals and the Vikings baseball and softball teams went on the road to win Cedar Run District titles.

There were more titles just missed as both the Loudoun Valley girls and Heritage boys soccer teams fell in district title games in overtime with the Vikings girls going all the way to penalty kicks before losing. And for the first time in recent memory, if ever, there will be no local AA teams in the VHSL open state lacrosse tournament as both the Broad Run girls and Dominion boys lost at Western Albemarle Wednesday.

The Playoff Skinny for
Wed. May 26
Baseball
Cedar Run District Finals
Loudoun Valley 7, Osbourn 3
The Skinny: Cedar Run District Player of the Year Beattie Southerland went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and a Home Run, and 2 runs scored. Matt Reed had a 2-run Home Run in the 6th to increase the Vikings lead from 5-3 to 7-3. Alexander Barr had a big night at the plate with a 2-for-5 performance. The Vikings used three pitches on the night to hold regular-season champion Osbourn to 3 runs. Scott VanSteelant and Carl Larsen held the score to three runs and then Reed struck out the final batter with bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th to seal the win.

Softball
Cedar Run District Finals
Loudoun Valley 5, Battlefield 4
The Skinny: Valley proved what perseverance and teamwork is all about as they pulled all aspects of their game together in the final two innings against their district rival to overcome a 3-0 deficit and win the district tournament.

The Viking offense owned the 6th inning, scoring all 5 runs to take the lead. Pitcher Allie Reid started the comeback with a single, followed by a walk by center fielder Katlyn Latka, and a bobbled ball hit to right field that put Dani Psimas on base.  With bases loaded and 2 strikes, shortstop Shelby Wassman pounded a double to the green scoring 3 runs.

Then pitcher/1st baseman Kelsey Richardson singled to left field scoring Wassman and catcher Karli Johnson got on base after a misplayed ground ball.  Later pinch runner Courtney Bogan scored on a passed ball.

The Bobcats rallied in the bottom of the 7th to score 1 more run, but the Viking defense prevailed, stranding runners at the corners to end the game. Richardson pitched the first 3 innings (6 strike outs, 1 walk and 5 hits) before being relieved by Pitcher Allie Reid who effectively closed the game with 4 strike outs and 3.

The Vikings advance to the Northwest Regional Tournament which begins on Memorial Day, May 31st against Halifax County in South Boston.

Cedar Run District Finals
Battlefield 1, Heritage 0 (OT)
The Skinny: This game was scoreless and just 50 seconds away from a second 10-minute overtime and "Golden Goal" when Battlefield scored the game-winner. The Pride will play at Patrick Henry-Roanoke on Monday at 6 p.m. in the regional quarterfinals.

Girls Soccer
Cedar Run District Finals
Battlefield 2, Loudoun Valley 2 (2OT) Battlefield wins on PKs, 6-5
The Skinny: You can't really come any closer to winning a title than the Vikes did in this heartbreaker as Ashley Manning put Valley ahead, 2-1, in the 4th minute of overtime only to have the Bobcats tie the game with less than a minute left. Then with less than 10 seconds left in overtime, Valley drew a penalty kick but Battlefield's keeper guessed right and swatted the shot away. After a scoreless second Golden Goal overtime, the teams went to penalty kicks and twice Valley was up by one kick on Battlefield but the Bobcats fought back to tie it, 3-3, after the regulation five kicks. The game then went into basically sudden death penalty kicks and both teams converting two kicks before Battlefield's keeper again came up with a save and the Bobcats then converted a kick for the victory.

The Skinny: It wasn't supposed to be this easy for the Vikes as they hoasted unbeaten Brooke Point, ranked No. 2 in the region behind Valley with a 17-0 record, but Valley blitzed the visitors ... scoring 24 seconds into the contest and then reeling off nine straight first-quarter goals. By the time BP scored with 3:28 left in the first half, it was 11-0 Valley and the Vikes nursed that lead home after a pedestrian second half. Denis Radcliffe had a hat trick for the Vikes in less than five minutes to open the game and finished with four goals in the first quarter.

Track and Field: Potomac Falls After Dulles District Sweep Leads Area Athletes to Region II Meet; Northern and Northwest Region Meets Also Slated

(May 26, 2010) - It is region track and field time with the Potomac Falls High School boys and girls teams, fresh off a sweep at the Dulles District meet, leading athletes from seven AA schools to Thursday's Region II meet at Handley. Stone Bridge will compete at this week's Northern Region meet at Lake Braddock and Loudoun Valley is off to UVa for the Northwest Region meet.

On the girls side, the Panthers won their first ever Dulles District title with Nicole Fauteux's stunning comeback on the anchor leg of the 4x400 win capping the meet. Fauteux, who also won the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles with a district meet record, received the baton exchange some 75 yards behind but closed the gap with a 58-split and passed the last runner in front of her in the final 15 yards before an appreciative crowd at Freedom High School.

On the boys side, the Panthers won the title for the first time in more than five years thanks to a talented pack of long distance runners that took four of six places in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meters.

VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa caught up with the Panthers last week and interview Nicole Fauteux and her freshman sister Eileen and he spoke the "pack", the PFalls boys long distance runners as well as the Panther head track and field coach Courtney Cornwall.

Finally in the first minute of the second, it was the underclassmen that got things going for the Titan's as Freshman Nick Kirschke scored on a feed from fellow Freshman Brent Bushman. A goal 25 seconds later from Jr Stephen Tarrant and a nice rip from Soph Evan Wright, and the Titan's were back in the game, trailing 6-3 at that point. But it was the Titan Seniors that got things cranking from then on as Senior Nick Brendes poured in 7 goals and Sr Thomas Dewar whipped in 4, with Jr Attackmen Stephen Tarrant providing 5 assists and Kyle Hall dishing out 4. The Titans trailed at halftime 9-7 but scored another 7 goals in the 3rd to take a 14-12 lead at the end of three. The Skinny on the Dulles District Semifinals: Road Teams Pull Off the Upsets

(May 26, 2010) - On paper the eight Dulles District semifinal contests Tuesday night in baseball, softball and soccer looked like a slam dunk for the home teams as they had a combined 15-0-1 record in the regular season against their foes, but the road teams were up to the task, going 4-for-8, including Loudoun County High School's 4-1 upset over baseball No. 1 seed Potomac Falls.

The Raiders surprising win leaves Thursday's district final at Freedom High School, between No. 4 seed Loudoun County and No. 2 Broad Run, a 10-0 winner over Briar Woods Tuesday, as not only a title game but also a playin game for the second Region II bid. Potomac Falls advances as the regular season champion.

Since three regular-season champions -- Broad Run boys and girls soccer and Briar Woods softball -- all took care of business Tuesday, three other teams clinched regional bids with wins Tuesday, all of them No. 3 seeds on the road as Park View ended Broad Run's three-year AA state title run with a 7-1 win; Potomac Falls boys soccer edged Loudoun County, 2-1; and Loudoun County girls soccer came from behind, erasing a 2-0 deficit with only 18 minutes to play, to stun Freedom, 3-2.

Looking to add tournament titles to their regular-season crowns, Briar Woods softball shutout Loudoun County, 3-0, with sophomore Macy Jones setting a school record with 18 strikeouts; Broad Run girls soccer edged Potomac Falls, 1-0; and Broad Run boys soccer beat Park View, 3-1.

All the finals are at Freedom with softball and girls soccer starting at 6 p.m., baseball at 7 p.m. and boys soccer following the girls game, between 7:45 and 8 p.m.

The Skinny on the Dulles District Semifinals
Baseball
Broad Run 10, Briar Woods 0 (5)
The Skinny: Junior Taylor Clarke had an outstanding performance on the mound for the Spartans striking out 10 in five innings of work. Clarke allowed two hits and no walks on the evening. With the win, Clarke improves to 8-1 with one Save on the year for the Spartans, who are now 17-4 as a team.

Offensively, several Spartans had big nights at the plate. Senior Shane Vlasic broke the game open in the third inning with a 3-run home run to right. On the night, Vlasic had three hits and five RBIs. Junior Ryan Johnston had a big night as well with a double and a 2-run home run over the left field fence in the fifth inning. Junior Shea Bargiel had three hits and two runs scored on the night, and junior Zach Rawson added two hits as well.

Loudoun County 4, Potomac Falls 1
The Skinny: The Raiders became the first Dulles District team to beat the Panthers since 2008 by playing an error-free game while taking advantage of timely hits, three Panther errors and the 2-hit pitching of junior Taylor Cokeley.

The Raiders scored two runs in the third and two more in the fifth. In the third, junior Henry Massey and senior Matt Cunningham both walked to start the inning. Cokeley then singled to load the bases. Massey scored on a passed ball, and Cunningham scored on a fielder's choice.

In the fith inning, Massey again walked to start things. He reached third after an errant pick off attempt and scored on a Cunningham single. Cunningham then moved around to third base on two more passed balls and scored on another errant throw, this one on a checked swing bunt by senior Kelly Drews.

Taylor Cokeley had three hits, a double and two singles. Besides Cunningham, the only other hit by the Raiders was a double by junior Kris Pratt.

The defense was solid behind Cokeley who only gave up two hits to the dangerous hitting Panthers. He recorded four strikeouts and got out of jams in the fourth and seventh.

Softball
Briar Woods 3, Loudoun County 0
The Skinny: Sophomore Macy Jones tossed a one-hitter with a school-record 18 strikeouts and also drove in the winning run in a three-run sixth inning as top-seeded Briar Woods blanked No. 5 Loudoun County.

The game proved to be a true pitcher's duel as Jones and Raider freshman Kiley Jacobus matched each other through five scoreless innings.

Jones retired the first 13 Raiders she faced -- including 12 via strikeout, while Jacobus only allowed two-out singles in the second and third. Jones walked to lead off the fourth and moved to second on a sacrifice by junior Kasey Ball, but Jacobus ended the threat with a pair of fly outs.

Loudoun County got its lone hit of the evening with one out in the fifth, but Jones struck out the next two batters to avoid trouble.

The Falcons finally broke through against Jacobus in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Holly Dominguez beat out a single to short to open the frame, and junior Kristina Karagiorgis moved Dominguez to second with a sacrifice bunt. Jones then dumped a single into left field to plate Dominguez with the game's first run, with Jones moving to second on an outfield error on the play.

Senior Kate Fowler then followed with a grounder to short that was misplayed. Jones raced to third on the error and continued home, and the throw to the plate was high and allowed Fowler to advance to second. Fowler then took third on a passed ball and later scored on a ground out by Ball.

Jones fanned the first two Raider hitters to start the seventh and closed out the game with a ground out to third.

Dominguez finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Jones went 1-for-2 with a single, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Olson went 1-for-2 with a single and was also hit by a pitch.

Jacobus was strong in defeat for the Raiders, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out five.

Park View 7, Broad Run 1
The Skinny: Robin Heironimus won her 16th game of the season by limiting the Spartans to four hits while the Patriot offense pounded out 12 hits. Offensive stars for the Patriots included Brittany Griffin with three hits; Sammie Gleason, Heironimus, Ally Rupard and Emily Nykorchuk also had two hits apiece. Rupard and Nykorchuk drove in two runs each as did Griffin. Dulles District Player of the Year Anna Blessing, who took the loss for the Spartans, wrapped up her brilliant 4-year career and scored BR's only run in the bottom of the seventh. It was the second straight season that the Patriots knocked the Spartans out of the district tournament in the semifinals. Last year Broad Run bounced back to win a third straight state title but BR will not defend its crown as their season is now finished.

Park View junior (left to right) Ally Rupard, Robin Heironimus and Emily Nykorchuk postgame

Boys Soccer
Broad Run 3, Park View 1
The Skinny: Broad Run led 1-0 at the half on junior Kevin Reitzel's header off senior Paul Ellington's throw-in in the 26th minute. The Patriots tied it early in the second half when the district's Player of the Year, junior Jose Miguel Herrera, scored an unassisted goal, with a nice chip over the keeper, in the 46th minute.

The Spartans answered four minutes later with junior Ryan Deutsch striking a one-timer from close range after running unmarked onto senior Danny Reategui's direct free kick. Junior Evan Thomas tacked on the insurance in the 71st minute after Broad Run was awarded an indirect free kick inside the penalty area and Thomas cleaned up a Reitzel pass.

Potomac Falls 2, Loudoun County 1
The Skinny: John Thomas scored the game winner in the second half for the No. 3 Panthers as they defeated No. 2 LC. Kevin King also scored for Potomac Falls, the defending district and region champion. With the Panthers up 1-0, Raider senior Kevin Doyle scored to tie the score at the half.

Girls Soccer
Broad Run 1, Potomac Falls 0
The Skinny: This game was tied until junior Ellie Zoepfl's goal midway through the second half. Spartan goalie sophomore Emily Myerson had one save to notch the shutout.

Loudoun County 3, Freedom 2
The Skinny: The Raiders were down 2-0 with 18 minutes left in their season when senior Olivia Mackey scored off of a corner kick from junior Leslie Lyford. Mackey's sister, sophomore Alana Mackey then tied the score with a goal and with two minutes left in the game Raider sophomore Shauna Kain completed the stunning comeback when she scored off of a long throw from sophomore Emma Sieber.

No. 3 Briar Woods (9-10) at No. 2 Broad Run (16-4), 7 p.m.
The series: BR won 5-3 on 4.20 and 10-2 on 5.14
The Skinny on how they advanced
Briar Woods 11, Freedom 8
The Falcons defeated rival Freedom in a game that tested the young team's mettle and earned them the school's first ever playoff baseball win.

The Falcons took the field with their ace David Phillips (Jr) on the mound, who struggled a bit. Freedom's Matt Murphy tripled in the first to score two and then he crossed the plate on Matt Malacane's sac fly for a 3-0 lead.

The Falcons responded in the home half of the inning as Austin Frattali (Sr) led off with a single to left, Michael Lord (Fr) singled to right, Gavin Scherer (Sr) walked, and all three scored on senior Kyle Haufler’s double to deep center to tie the game, 3-3.

In the top of the third, the Eagles got to Phillips again for three more runs, and Matt Irish (So) came on for the Falcons to end the threat with Freedom up now 6-3. Irish would allow only one hit over the next two innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons struck again, loading the bases on singles by Irish and Thomas Lechler (So), and a walk by Victor Rizzardi (Jr). All three scored on Frattali’s triple down the right field line. Frattali later scampered home on a wild pitch, to give Briar Woods its first lead, 7-6.

With the Falcons up 8-6 in the top of the sixth, the Eagles rallied with singles by Teal, Chapman and Plesce to score two runs and tie the game at 8-8.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles had gone to their bullpen, and secured two quick outs when things came unraveled. Lord reached base on a third strike in the dirt that rolled to the backstop. Scherer (Sr) reached on a dropped fly ball deep to right, with Lord scoring on the play, to put BW up 9-8.

Kyle Haufler (Sr) singled, Harris (Sr) walked, and Irish reached when the third baseman could not come up with the ball on his slow roller. When it was over, three Falcons had scored, and Briar Woods went into the final frame with an 11-8 lead.

Lechler (So) came on to close for the Falcons, securing two quick outs on a ground ball to sure-handed shortstop Kevin Wood (So), and a pop-up to first baseman Frattali. But the Eagles would not go quietly, with Newell and Teal reaching base on back-to-back singles. With the tying run at the plate, Lechler induced the Eagle’s Baker into hitting a ground ball to short that Wood handled to end the game.

The loss brought a close to the Freedom Eagles’ spring campaign, but it is clear that in 2011 this young Eagles team will return as a legitimate competitor in the Dulles District.

Broad Run 11, Dominion 0 (5)
Senior Shane Vlasic picked up the win on the mound for the Spartans. Vlasic threw 43 pitches through his four innings of work. He allowed 2 hits, no runs, struck out 6, and walked none.
