Glass High School, is arguably the most competitive track meet in the state and a key indicator supporting that claim is the fact the 41 national elite times were posted on Saturday!

The Skinny for April 24-26 for Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Tennis and Track

(Apr. 30, 2010) - Last Saturday it was all about the long ball, both in baseball -- as in Freedom's Brendan Shockley's 2-run home run or Loudoun Valley's Alex Owens' two 3-run home runs -- and in softball -- as in Loudoun County's Kelley Duerbeck's towering home run or Stone Bridge's Niki Prince's 2-run home run or Park View's Sammie Gleason's solo shot and teammate Robin Heironimus's two-run blast.

But the biggest story of the day belonged to the Broad Run boys lacrosse team as they defeated George Mason in overtime, 14-13, in a match-up of teams unbeaten in the Dulles District. The Spartans travel to Briar Woods this coming Monday, May 3, for a game that could likely decided the regular-season district title. (Click the Read More for the Scoop ...er ... The Skinny)

On the Sidelines: Broad Run Boys Soccer Team Manager Joey Donati Provides Inspiration for Spartans

By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun.com Editor

(Apr. 27, 2010) - There is a big reason that I call my column "On the Sidelines" because often the most inspirational stories are not found on the field but on the bench or in the stands or on the sidelines. And nowhere is that more true than the inspiration behind the Broad Run High School boys soccer team eight-game run to the top of the AA Dulles District standings.

A big win on Friday -- 2-0 over second place Loudoun County -- left the Spartans two games clear of the field midway through the 12-game district slate and once again in the midst of the Spartans success was sophomore team manager Joey Donati. Born with Noonan Syndrome, the soon-to-be 17-year-old is only 4-foot-3 but that hasn't stopped Broad Run boys coach Jonathan Hicks from saying that his players "look up to Donati" for his bravery and attitude on life.

Video on Joey Donati, Broad Run Boys Soccer Team Manager (picture quality took a beating as we switched this from an HD video to avi but you can still get the point)

Hicks has worked with Donati in several classes and coaxed him to become the team's manager this season. Donati's mother Alicia says that becoming the team manager has helped Joey fit into school life a little bit better.

And Donati can be credited with an emotional highpoint this season. The team manager prior to the Park View High School game had a question for his coach one day in the classroom: "why do you have to ask the players to play hard before each game."

Hey, he rationalized, that if he were big enough and physically able enough to wear the Broad Run jersey and play on the field, he would try hard every single time he stepped on the field. He wouldn't need a coach or anybody else to tell him to play hard. Hicks was stunned by the observation by Donati and asked him if he wanted to deliver that week's pregame talk to the players.

Donati agreed and before the Park View game he told the players exactly what he had told coach earlier. Hicks said there were some tears in some of his players eyes as they listed to the team manager. They haven't lost since.

Each postgame the Spartans give out three awards normally, a Man of the Match, a Crackerjacks Award and a Nuts and Bolts Award. Now there is a fourth award -- The Joey Award. Donati picks his a player each game and hands out a Mr. Goodbar ... his favorite chocolate that he can't eat because of braces.

In Friday's game, Broad Run scored on two of Paul Ellington's throw-ins, the first came in the first half, a laser of a throw in the 28th minute that grazed Evan Thomas and found the far post past Raider keeper Calle Brown. Headed to Virginia next year, Brown is one of the top keepers in the state but then again, Broad Run has a marquee keeper in junior Paul Hegedus and on this night it was Hegedus with, not one, but two 1-on-1 saves of high-scoring LC forward Kevin Doyle that preserved the shutout.

The Spartans added the insurance in the 61st minute, this time on an Ellington thrown that went away from the goalmouth and was redirected by a BR foot back to the edge of the 18 where Danny Reategui flicked the ball over the congestion into the box and into the back of the net.

For the Spartan defense the shutout came with defensive leader, junior center mid Taylor Johnson, sidelined for a fourth straight game with a lower leg injury. While doing his duties as team manager, such as keeping the water bottles filled, Donati also sits on the bench and pays close attention to the action on the field so you didn't have to tell him that the defense as a group had played the key role in the win because when it was his turn to give out the "Joey Award" ... he gave it to the entire defense and asked them to break up the candy bar into pieces.

The players then huddled and with Donati in the center, he broke them down with the team cheer. Though, surrounded by the taller players, Donati was right where he wanted to be and what more can you ask for in high school and life.

Girls Soccer: Briar Woods Sophomore Has a Shot to Make Colombian U-20 Women's World Cup Squad

U-20 womens's players work out at the el Centro de Alto Rendimiento de Bogotá.

By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun.com Editor

(Apr. 22, 2010) - Quick, what do the Dresden Castle in Germany, el Centro de Alto Rendimiento de Bogotá and Briar Woods High School girls soccer team all have in common? How about super sophomore Lina Granados and the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

Granados has missed a key Falcon Dulles District game this week but she can be forgiven as the forward is spending two weeks training with the Colombian U-20 women's national team which could lead to a spot on the roster of the upcoming U-20 Women's World Cup this July in Germany.

"It is going very well," Granados reported on Thursday, the same day that FIFA made the draw for the 16-team tournament at the historic castle in Dresden. "It's an experience that I know I will never forget."

Born in Colombia, Granados holds dual citizenship, and is ranked by some soccer sites as one of the top 100 girls players in the United States for the Class of 2012. Her coach, Ann Vierkorn, while missing her services in a 2-0 loss at Dulles District leader Broad Run on Tuesday is rooting for the personable player who she calls "extremely coachable".

Granados left for Bogota and the high-altitude training on April 15 and won't return to the United States and Briar Woods until May 3. Even though at 16 she is younger than the rest of the players at training, who are 18 or 19, she is holding her own according to reports and has a legitimate shot at making the team.

Vierkorn says that Granados may bring the best of both worlds to the Colombian squad as she has some real South American creativity in her game but also brings the American game to the field as well.

"She has a flair about her and she is always looking for little flicks. She brings creativity to our offensive third," said Vierkorn. "The advantage she has is she also brings the American game such as diagonal runs."

Granados even reports that at 5-foot-5 she is one of the taller players in camp. And despite the big opportunity on her plate, Granados really wanted to talk to her coach about how the team did against Broad Run and she was sad that she missed the game.

"She still cares about her high school team. She is a very dedicated player. That is what I love about her," said Vierkorn. "She is so coachable and leads by example. What we were missing Tuesday against Broad Run was that person that could finish."

Despite missing time with the Briar Woods team, Granados is getting plenty of soccer as she reports that the U-20 in Bogota is going through two three to three-and-half hour training sessions per day plus extensive weight training.

"She is quite an amazing kid. She is very talented but also very grounded," said Vierkorn.

Earlier today, Dresden Castle was the spectacular venue for the official group stage draw for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Germany 2010. The representatives from each of the 16 qualified nations followed proceedings attentively as their opponents for the group stages of the tournament which takes place between 13 July and 1 August in the four host cities of Augsburg, Bielefeld, Bochum and Dresden were revealed.

There promises to be plenty of excitement in Group C, in which England, Nigeria, Mexico and Japan will be competing for a place in the quarter-finals. Hosts Germany are up against Costa Rica, Colombia and France in Group A, while reigning champions USA were drawn with Ghana, Switzerland and Korea Republic. However, the toughest group on paper is probably Group B, which pits Brazil with former champions Korea DPR, European giants Sweden and New Zealand.

In a curious twist of fate, the opening game of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup mirrors the first fixture of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ as the hosts take on Costa Rica.

Following the Draw, Steffi Jones said: "You can hear and feel the enthusiasm and euphoria. The guests can look forward to four great host cities and you should be aware that the U-20 girls play world class football." Whereas Der Kaiser, Franz Beckenbauer, Chairman of the Organising Committee for the FIFA U-20 and U-17 Women's World Cups, added: "The U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile was a very successfull World Cup. I am pretty sure that Germany 2010 will be as successfull as the one in Chile two years ago."

The draw itself was presided over by Tatjana Haenni, FIFA's Head of Women's competitions, and carried out by six high-profile players from the world of women's football, Yuki Nagasato (Japan), Carol Carioca (Brazil), Adjoa Bayor (Ghana), Alexandra Krieger, Marie-Louise Bagehorn and Dzsenifer Marozsan (all Germany).

The 16 teams were split into four groups of four, with the top two teams from each group going through to the quarter-finals.

The teams were drawn into the following groups:

Group A: Germany (hosts), Costa Rica, Colombia and France

Group B: Brazil, Korea DPR, Sweden, New Zealand

Group C: England, Nigeria, Mexico, Japan

Group D: USA, Ghana, Switzerland, Korea Republic

To get the U-20 Women's World Cup, Columbia, in pool play in South America, defeated Ecuador, 3-1, Chile, 2-1, Argentina, 2-0, and Bolivia, 2-0, to advance to the semifinals. In the "Final Four," Colombia edged out Paraguay, 2-1, in a thrilling match to secure a spot in the finals against Brazil. In the championship match before a crowd in excess of 28,000, Colombia came up a little short, falling to the mighty Brazilians, 2-0.

“Losing in the final was a disappointment but I’m still proud of my girls,” commented Colombia coach Ricardo Rozo after the loss to Brazil.

Softball: First-Place Briar Woods, with Macy at the Bat, Makes History with 7-5 Win at Broad Run

Welcome Home! Falcons greet sophomore Macy Jones (wearing the helmet and the smile!) after her 3-run home run put Briar Woods ahead for good Tuesday. Jones collected a school-record 5 RBIs at the plate and won the game in relief as Briar Woods beat Broad Run for the first time in school history

Check back later for a full photo gallery from this game.

Ashburn (Apr. 22, 2010) - There have been a lot of "crooked numbers" put up on the Broad Run High School softball scoreboard in the last decade but rarely, by an opponent, but that is exactly what happened Tuesday night as sophomore Macy Jones collected a school-record five RBIs, including a three-run home run, to lead Briar Woods to a wild 7-5 Dulles District victory over the three-time defending AA state champion Spartans.

Jones' line drive blast over the right-center fence came in the fourth inning and put the Falcons up for good, 6-5, as she came in relief in the pitching circle to hold Broad Run scoreless over the final four innings.

Briar Woods improves to 8-1 overall, their best start in the program's five-year history, and moved to 5-0 in the Dulles District. It was the Falcons first ever win over the Spartans in 12 all-time meetings. Broad Run falls to 2-2 and 7-3.

Briar Woods softball coach Jennifer Traina and sophomore Macy Jones Postgame Interview - Part 1 of 2

Briar Woods jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior Holly Dominguez (4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored) singled and later scored on an error following a single by Jones.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Broad Run countered with two runs in the bottom of the first as junior Maggie Betz lead off with a double, senior Anna Blessing was hit by a pitch, and sophomore Kate Sims walked to load the bases with two outs. Freshman Dani Cook then drove a two-run single down the first base line, giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead.

The see-saw battle continued in the second as Briar Woods plated two runs in the top of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. Junior Alex Fierszt and Dominguez hit back-to-back singles with one out, and following a ground out, Jones lined a two-run single to put the visitors back in front.

Once again, the Spartans answered in their half of the inning as Betz reached first on a two-out walk, then scored on an RBI double to left center field by freshman McKall Miller to tie the game at 3-3.

Broad Run retook the lead in the bottom of the third inning as back-to-back walks to Sims and Cook were followed by sophomore Jordan Small getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jones then took over for Falcon’s senior Kate Fowler in the circle, and the Spartans were able to score twice on passed balls and the aggressive base running gave Broad Run a 5-3 lead.

Trailing 5-3, the Falcons went right back to work on offense in the top of the fourth. Dominguez started the rally by reaching on a one-out infield single, and junior Kristina Karagiorgis followed by reaching on an error. Jones then came to the plate and roped a 3-2 pitch over the fence in right center to put the Falcons in front 6-5.

Jones then retired Spartans in order in the bottom of the fourth, and the Falcons got fine defensive plays from senior Hayley Olson and junior Jillian Olson in the bottom of the fifth. After a lead-off walk, Hayley Olson raced in to catch a pop up on a bunt attempt, and Jillian Olson then raced out from behind the plate to catch a foul pop up down the first base line for the second out. The Olsons then teamed up for the third out when Jillian fired a strike to Hayley at third to throw out a basestealer for the inning's final out.

The Falcons added an insurance run in the top of the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by junior Kasey Ball.

The Spartans had the tying runs on base in the bottom of the sixth but Jones ended the threat by inducing a ground out to second. Jones allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh but a fly out to center sealed the victory.

Jones finished 3-for-3 with a school-record five RBIs and picked up her second win of the season in the circle. She allowed three singles, struck out five and walked one in 4 2/3 innings of relief. Blessing pitched a complete game for the Spartans and took the loss, giving up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks, striking out five.

College Update: Stone Bridge Grad Kayla Lechler's Walk-Off Blast Gives Columbia 6-5 Win Over Princeton, Caps Booming Week for Sophomore Slugger

(Apr. 21, 2010) - Former Stone Bridge High School standout and current Columbia University sophomore Kayla Lechler, fresh off hitting her first career home run earlier in the week against Fairleigh Dickinson, cracked a game-tying solo home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh to send the first game of a scheduled doubleheader with Princeton on April 17 to extra innings.

And after the Tigers had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth, Lechler came through again with a walk-off two-run homer to give the Columbia University softball team a thrilling 6-5 victory at Columbia Softball Stadium.

The two home runs capped a 4-for-5 day for the Ashburn, Va. native, who drove in three runs and scored two more.

Trailing by a run and with a runner on in the ninth, Lechler drilled her third career home run over the left-field fence. All of Lechler's home runs in her career have come in a four day span.

A one-out walk in the seventh set up Lechler's heroics.

Lechler continued her hot hitting the next day with a pair of doubles and three hits in another doubleheader.

In earlier in the week, Lechler belted the first home run of her career, a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning to cap an eight-run frame that led Columbia to a 12-8 win in the first game of a doubleheader with Fairleigh Dickinson.

Lechler leads the Lions in hitting this season with a .347 average in 35 starts. She has scored 26 runs with 22 RBIs. Lechler's slugging percentage is .492. She is an astro physics major at Columbia.

Softball Round-up: April 16-17 - Briar Woods Doubles Up on Park View to Sit Alone in First in Dulles District

(Apr. 20, 2010) - The Briar Woods High School softball team made its first ever regional playoff appearance last year after winning the Dulles District tournament and this year the Falcons want to take the regular season title as well. The Falcons took a big step towards that goal by doubling up on Park View, 6-3, on Friday.

The Patriots, previously unbeaten in district, fall to 2-1 in the Dulles and 7-2 overall, while the Falcons now sit at 4-0 and 7-1. Briar Woods faces 4-time district regular-season champ Broad Run, 2-1 and 7-2, tonight in Ashburn at 6 p.m. in another key match-up.

In Friday's win, Briar Woods sophomore Macy Jones snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run double in the fourth inning and struck out 10 in four innings of relief as the Falcons won on the road.

The Falcons struck first when senior Holly Dominguez opened the game with a single and later scored on a double by Jones.

However, the Patriots (7-2, 2-1) answered in the home half of the first on a two-out RBI-double by Rebecca Patton.

Briar Woods took a 3-1 lead by scoring twice on passed ball in the third, but Park View countered again with two unearned runs in the bottom of the frame on a pair of errors and three singles.

The Falcons wasted no time regaining the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Junior Alex Fierszt drew a one-out walk, and Dominguez followed with a single. Fierszt was erased at third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of junior Kristina Karagiorgis, and, after a passed ball allowed Dominguez and Karagiorgis to advance, Jones followed with another double to plate both runners.

Briar Woods added its final run in the top of the sixth when freshman Lynn Brantley was hit by a pitch and later scored on another passed ball.

Jones, who finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs, was equally as impressive in the circle and earned the victory after striking out 10 of the 13 batters she faced in four innings of relief. She allowed a two-out triple in the bottom of the seventh but fanned the final Patriot hitter to seal the victory.

The loss for the Patriots went to Robin Heironimus, who fell to 7-2 for the season. Heironimus had six strikeouts and walked three. Hitting stars for the Patriots were Sam Thomas with three hits including a triple in the seventh and Patton with two hits, including a double and two RBIs. Ally Rupard also doubled for the Patriots and drove in the other run.

Briar Woods 1 0 2 2 0 1 0 - 6 5 0
Park View    1 0 2 0 0 0 0 - 3 7 3

Soccer Round-up: April 16-17- Stone Bridge PK's Way to 1-0 Sweep Over Robinson; Valley Sweeps Battlefield; BW Boys Upset Park View; BR Girls Edge Freedom

(Apr. 19, 2010) - Friday was shaping up to be a big night for Stone Bridge High School senior Abdul Shaban and junior Emily Fredrikson as two defensive standouts were leading their teams in a boys/girls doubleheader Friday night against Robinson.

Shaban, however, was also asking Fredrikson to the prom in between games. First, however, Shaban scored the game winner on a penalty kick to give the No. 2 ranked Bulldog boys a 1-0 win over the No. 1 ranked Rams.

And then Fredrikson -- after saying "yes!" -- went out and scored a game winner on a penalty kick to give the No. 9 Bulldog girls a 1-0 win over the No. 10 Rams.

Now that is a big night!

In other action, Loudoun Valley staked its claim to the top of the Cedar Run standings with both the boys and girls beating Battlefield and Broad Run got good news is both the boys and girls Dulles District standings with a sweep over Freedom and the Spartan boys opened up a lead in the regular-season title race with Park View falling to Briar Woods.

Saturday, April 17
Boys Soccer
Broad Run 2, Heritage 1
The Skinny: Broad Run went up early on a Danny Mendoza goal but Heritage tied it in the 69th minute on a Ruben Flores score. Danny Reategui converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute for the game winner. Spartans were playing without five starters in this non-district day game.

Stonewall Jackson 4, Potomac Falls 2
The Skinny: Panthers fall in non-district day contest

Girls Soccer
Potomac Falls 2, Stonewall Jackson 1
The Skinny: Sara Ahart scored at least one of the two goals as Panthers win non-district contest.

Friday, April 16
Boys Soccer
Stone Bridge 1, Robinson 0
The Skinny: Abdul Shaban's penalty kick, tucked neatly into the upper left corner of the net in the 16th minute was the game's only score between the team ranked atop of the Washington Post poll. It was an even match with both teams firing seven shots in a strong wind that affected play.

Broad Run 5, Freedom 2
The Skinny:The Spartans scored three goals in the first seven minutes -- by Spencer Martin and two by Taylor Johnson, one on a Paul Ellington throw-in, to run away with this contest. Spartans added another goal in the first hal (30th minute Eugene Ejiba unassisted) and then scored five mintues into the second half on a Kevin Reitzel penalty kick for a 5-0 cushion. The Eagles added goals by Phillip McQuitty in the 57th mimute and Thornill in the 77th minute.

Briar Woods 3, Park View 2
The Skinny: The Patriots, ranked in the Washington Post Top 10 a week ago, fell for the second straight time. The Falcons have not reported on this win.

Loudoun Valley 1, Battlefield 0
The Skinny: The game-winning goal was scored by senior forward Stephen Palmer on a beautifully taken corner kick by freshman forward Anthony Flores in the 52nd minute. Battlefield pressed hard for the equalizer in the final 20 minutes but Valley's defense, anchored by senior Captain central back Dan Nesbit, offered Battlefield very few looks at their goal. Junior goalkeeper Ben Waring made seven saves to record a clean sheet.

Girls Soccer
Loudoun Valley 3, Battlefield 1
The Skinny: Battlefield controlled the majority of the first half taking advantage of the wind; however, they found it difficult penetrating deep into Valley’s defensive end of the field. The momentum changed with a few minutes left in the half with a goal from Viking freshman Sarah Hardison off of an assist from Ashley Manning. Valley made formation changes during the half countering the defensive strategy shown by Battlefield in the first half. With an early goal from Manning Valley took control of the game putting it away with a penality kick goal from Amber Cook midway through the second half.

Broad Run 2, Freedom 1
The Skinny: Cassie Smith and Rachel Tharp scored within 10 minutes of each other in the first half to lead BR to the win. Tharp assisted on Smith's goal in the 18th minute and then Ellie Zoepfl assisted Tharp in the 28th minute. Freedom got one back in the 77th minute but couldn't get the equlizer. The Spartans out-shot the Eagles, 16-12.

Briar Woods 6, Park View 1
The Skinny: Briar Woods has another impressive showing against conference opponent Park View with goals by Shell Davis, Morgan McCarthy, Brittany Donegan, Kylee Palensky and two by Ashley Carmean, assists by Domynique Garret from 18 total shots on frame. Two saves by Cloe Barnes and two by Sarah Gordon for another outstanding performance by Briar Woods defenders and keepers.
With only six goals against in seven outings, the Falcon's are a formidable opponent in the back third. With a defense led by Sam Russell and Karli Masengale and outstanding goalkeeping by Cloe Barnes, the Falcon's are more impressive considering three of those goals are off PKs from hand-balls in the box. The Falcon's carry their 6-1 record to Broad Run April 20th for another conference showdown.

Stone Bridge 1, Robinson 0
The Skinny: This game appeared to be headed to overtime but a late questionable foul call in the box gave Emily Fredrikson the chance to be the hero and she converted a penalty kick by slotting the ball to the right of a diving keeper with just 5:39 left in the scoreless contest. Stone Bridge out-shot Robinson, 13-9.

Heritage 3, Osbourn 1
The Skinny: The Pride get the Cedar Run District win on Alex Mosley's hat trick.

News: Sherando Wins Appeal to Remain in Region II

(Apr. 19, 2010) - Sherando High School won its appeal to stay in the AA Region II instead of being moved up to the AAA classification.

Frederick County Schools recently redrew boundaries to keep Sherando's population just within the AA limits. Sherando is now projected to have 1,571 students, making it the region's largest school. Freedom at 1593 and Broad Run at 1595 are being moved up (starting in 2011-12) to the AAA Northwest Region Cedar Run District which was where Sherando was headed before winning its appeal.

Freedom and Broad Run will be smaller than three of the other four schools in the Cedar Run including Osbourn (1974), Stonewall Jackson (2384) and Battlefield (2873). Loudoun Valley and Heritage, currently in the Cedar Run, are moving down and back into Region II and the Dulles District with new schools opening in Leesburg and Purcellville this fall.

Stone Bridge, on the other hand, remains in the AAA Liberty District in the Northern Region where the Bulldogs at 1945 students will be larger than any other school except for Langley (2076) and Fairfax (2362).

The new Dulles District starting in 2011 will include nine high schools from Loudoun: Briar Woods, Dominion, Heritage, Loudoun County, Loudoun Valley, Park View, Potomac Falls, Tuscarora and Woodgrove.

The results of the Redistricting and Reclassification Committee Appeals Hearings have been posted on the VHSL website along with the updated 2011-12 and 2012-13 Classification Plan. Click on this link to access: http://www.vhsl.org/classification. Final action on this plan will be taken at the Executive Committee meeting on May 6.

Summary Report of Appeals and Action/Justification by R&R Committee
April 19, 2010
The following summary represents the chronology of appeals presented to the VHSL Redistricting and Reclassification (R&R) Committee at its meeting on April 19, 2010. The committee's action in response to each appeal is noted along with its justification for the decisions.

I. William Monroe High School appealed its placement in the Jefferson District, Region II, Group AA and requested instead to be placed in a district in Region B, Group A.
Action: Doug Straley moved, Sue Ross seconded and the committee voted 7-6 (Straley, Crook, Thomas, Ross, Hollandsworth and Compton voting yes along with Chairman Melton, to break the tie) to grant William Monroe’s appeal to move to Group A.
Justification: It was noted that had the break points of 104 (AAA), 104 (AA) and 103 (A) been reversed, William Monroe – with just one student making the difference – would have been Group A.
Placement: Steve Barnett moved, Stan Latham seconded and the committee voted 12-0 to place William Monroe in the Bull Run District, Region B, Group A. Placement in the Bull Run District would keep the region balanced.

II. Central (Woodstock) High School appealed its placement in Northwest District, Region II, Group AA and requested instead to be placed in Bull Run District (or any Region B district the committee would designate), Region B, Group A.
Action: Sue Ross moved, Doug Straley seconded and the committee voted 12-0 to grant Central’s appeal to move to Group A.
Justification: Central High School (after correcting a computer programming error) had a change in the actual numbers reported to DOE; the resulting number of 751 is within the Group A range.
Placement: Steve Barnett moved, Steve Leaman seconded and the committee voted 12-0 to place Central (W) in the Bull Run District, Region B, Group A. Placement in the Bull Run District would keep the region balanced.

III. Sherando High School appealed its placement in the Cedar Run District, Northwest Region, Group AAA and requested instead to be placed in Northwest District, Region II, Group AA.
Action: Steve Leaman moved, Steve Spangler seconded and the committee voted 12-0 to grant Sherando’s appeal to move to Group AA.
Justification: The Frederick County School Board took action on February 4 to redistrict the county’s three schools such that Sherando’s numbers would be reduced significantly and would be well within the Group AA range.
Placement: Steve Leaman moved, Larry Compton seconded and the committee voted 12-0 to place Sherando in the Northwest District, Region II, Group AA.

Girls Lacrosse Round-up - April 9-17 - Loudoun Valley Knocks off Oakton

(Apr. 19, 2010) - The Loudoun Valley and Stone Bridge girls lacrosse teams haven't scheduled each other this season so the Vikes and Bulldogs will have to battle it out in the standings and thus far both teams are ranked in the Top 10 in the state of Virginia by LaxPower.

After a win over Oakton Saturday, the 5-1 Vikes are No. 4 and the top-ranked public high school. Last year Valley went 19-1 with the only loss to eventual VHSL state champion Chantilly in the state semifinals. Valley's only loss this season, was by a goal in the opener to private Bishop Ireton. The Vikes have quality wins over Langley and Battlefield.

Boys Lacrosse Round-up April 9-17 - Streaks Reversed as Broad Run Edges Dominion

Photos courtesy of Jenny Butcher

(Apr. 19, 2010) - The Dominion High School boys lacrosse team was riding a 4-game winning streak coming into Thursday night's game against Dulles District power Broad Run while the Spartans had suffered three defeats in three games. But both teams knew those records meant nothing, and as predicted, this one was close all the way, with the the Titans never quite catch able to catch the visiting Spartans which escaped with an 11-8 win.

Broad Run came out playing a slow deliberate game, keeping the ball out of the hands of the normally potent Titan offense, and it worked, as the score at the end of the first period was 1-0 Spartans.

The Titans found their balance in the second, scoring three times, including two by senior Thomas Dewar, but the Spartans kept pace and maintained a 5-3 lead at the half.

In the third, the Titans benefited from Spartan penalities with senior Nick Brendes scoring two man-up goals. But again the Spartans had answers and led 8-5 at the end of three.

Both Dewar and Brendes came through for the Titans in the fourth period, with Brendes adding two more goals. But shifty Spartan junior attackman Ryan Madigan found the back of the net three times in the fourth period to keep it out of reach for the Titans.

Titan Goalie Andrew Fawkes helped keep the Spartan scoring in check with 12 saves on the night.

Scoring:
Titans -
Stephen Tarrant 4 Assists
Sean Cooper 1 Goal
Nick Brendes 4 Goals
Thomas Dewar 3 Goals 1 Assist

Spartans -
Anthony Olimpio 1 goal
Ryan Madigan 4 goals 2 assists
Jack Sistare 1 assist
Nick Khouri 3 goals 2 assists
Garrett Howard 1 goal
Andy Londos 1 goal 1 assist
Justin Nelson 1 goal
