Purcellville (Sept. 23, 2010) – Loudoun Valley seniors Tanner Welsh and Scott Davidson finished 1-2 at the Cedar Run District golf tournament Wednesday at the Loudoun Golf and Country Club but Battlefield edged the Vikes for the team title.
The Bobcats, led by sisters Karishma and Khushboo Thiagaraj, shot a 297 to win the title by seven strokes over Valley which came in at 304. Battlefield had five players shoot 77 or lower on the par-72 course.
“The last three or four years, it is always close when we play Battlefield,” said Loudoun Valley coach Gary McKay whose Vikings won both Cedar Run min-tournaments to take the regular-season title.
Both Battlefield and Loudoun Valley advance to the Northwest Region tournament which will be held Oct. 4 at The Gauntlet in Fredericksburg. Also qualifying were five players from Heritage which shot 323 in the 4-team tournament.
Playing for the final time on their home course as prep golfers, Welsh turned in a winning 71, one stroke ahead of fellow captain Davidson, who tied with Heritage’s Ryan Douglass and took second via a playoff.
“Tanner has been very, very consistent. He has a mind for the game,” said McKay. “(Welsh) and Davidson are both very consistent.”
The difference Wednesday were the Thiagaraj sisters who transferred to Battlefield this year from Maryland where Karishma was one of the top players in the state. Her 73 Wednesday was not a surprise but her sister, Kushboo, a freshman, turned in a super low 74 from the No. 6 spot. The average score recorded by the No. 6 on the other three squads was 97.
“Oh my, they are the real deal,” McKay said of the Bobcat girls.
Supporting Welsh and Davidson for the Vikes were Ian Hildebrand at 78 and a pair of 83s from Mac Kaseman and Scott Mumpower.
Moving on from Heritage besides Douglass are Ryan Sullivan (79), Nicole Feaster (83), Ty Kobylinski (89) and Andrew Bayer (90).
