College Signing: Dominion's Alex Rizzo to Play Lacrosse at U.S. Naval Academy

(Dec. 31, 2009) - Dominion High School senior Alex Rizzo has accepted a nomination to attend the U.S. Naval Academy with a Presidential Nomination and has verbally committed to play lacrosse for the Mids.

Rizzo will play for Cindy Timchal, who has more wins in her career (362-95 for a .792 winning percentage) than any collegiate lacrosse coach in history, men's or womens's. Timchal, who started the Navy Division I program in 2006, led Maryland to eight NCAA titles in 16 seasons including seven straight from 1995 thru 2001.

Football: Peeler to Have Surgery on Knee, Likely to "Grayshirt" First Year at Pitt

(Dec. 31, 2009) - At the holiday basketball tournament this week at Broad Run High School there were many of the Spartan back-to-back VHSL Division 4 state title winning football players in the stands, including running back T.J. Peeler on crutches.

Peeler, injured in Broad Run's state title win over Amherst County earlier this month, confirmed that he will have knee surgery in January and faces a one-to-three month rehab.

One of the Washington D.C. area's top backs, Peeler is likely to "grayshirt" at Pitt next year, delaying fulltime enrollment until January/February 2011. This would allow Peeler to "redshirt" for the 2011 season and give him plenty of time for full recovery and to get his academic footing set.

Girls Basketball: SB Free Throw Practice Pays Off in Win Over BR; Valley Survives Scare vs. Dominion

Stone Bridge Coach Chris Jones and Senior Sara Stancik Postgame

By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun.com Editor
Ashburn (Dec. 29, 2009) - With the extended layoff from the snowstorm -- eight straight days off -- and a struggle at the foul line early in the season, Stone Bridge High School girls basketball coach Chris Jones decided his team needed some serious free throw practice Monday morning and each Bulldog took 100 foul shots. The practice paid off Monday night as Stone Bridge went 7 of 8 from the line down the stretch to ice a 46-35 victory over Broad Run in the Leesburg Honda Holiday Basketball Tournament at Stone Bridge High School.

It was the second victory this season for the Bulldogs (5-1) over neighbor Broad Run (4-3). In the opening game of the tournament, Loudoun Valley (3-2) survived a scare against winless Dominion (0-8) as the Titans led with less than a minute to go before Viking junior Jamie Gutch put LV ahead, 47-46. Christina Blue made a free throw in the closing seconds for the 48-46 LV win.

Kayla Sweet led LV with 14 while Gutch and Stephanie Purnell each scored 12. Imani Smith led the Titans with 14 points. The Vikes, missing one starter and the first two subs off the bench, struggled at the line, going 4 of 15.

Titan coach Anne Gasser was impressed by her team's offensive output after they have scored in the 20s most of the season but said the team wasn't used to being in the position of protecting a late lead.

Stone Bridge senior Sara Stancik had her third consecutive double-double as she hauled in at least 10 rebounds and scored a game-high 16 points. Morgan Roehling led BR with 12 points and Sarah Miller (11 rebounds) and Maggie Andricosky (10 rebounds) were big on the boards for the Spartans.

Boys Basketball: Stone Bridge Revs Up the Points vs. Titans at Leesburg Honda Tourney; Defensive BR Beats Valley; Freedom Falls at Westfield

(Dec. 29, 2009) - The Stone Bridge High School boys basketball team offense was hitting on all cylinders at the Leesburg Honda Holiday Basketball tournament Monday night at Broad Run High School as the Bulldogs poured in nearly 100 points in a 95-79 victory over Dominion.

In the tournament's opener, host Broad Run beat Loudoun Valley for the second time this season, with a 68-45 defensive victory. The Spartans (7-1) were led by 14 points apiece from Kevin McGaughey and Ahmad Zafar. The Vikes (3-2) struggled in the second quarter with just seven points and trailed, 35-22, at the half. Django Degree led LV with 12 points.

Nik Brown scored 12 of his game-high 29 points in the first quarter as Stone Bridge (4-2) sprinted out to a 31-17 lead over the Titans (1-7). Brown finished with three 3-pointers and had four steals, six rebounds and six assists. Richie Berry added 22 points and James Wells chipped in 16 for the high-scoring Bulldogs.

Chris Huff had five 3-pointers for Dominion and finished with 21. DeAndre Reaves scored 16 for the Titans and Kevin Conboy added 12. The AA Division 3 Titans 1-7 season mark includes an 0-5 record vs. larger AAA schools.

Freedom opened the Bulldog Bash at Westfield High School with a 67-45 loss to the host Bulldogs.

Boys Basketball: Friday Night Round-up - Briar Woods Takes Titans; SB Doubles TJ; Park View Over Loudoun County; Freedom Falls to GM

Stone Bridge 67, TJ 33
The Bulldogs opened AAA Liberty District play by doubling up on TJ Friday. Richie Berry and Nik Brown combined for 29 for SB.

Leading 29-20 at the half, the Bulldogs opened up the third quarter on a 11-0 run and never looked back, out-scoring the Colonials, 24-8, in the stanza.

SB (1-0, 3-2) defensive pressure caused a lot of turnovers and led to easy transition points. Jimmy Paige and Philip Nowakowski were big on the boards for the Bulldogs, picking up 10 and 8, respectively.

For the fourth straight game, Brown drew at least one charge on defense. James Wells and Berry each recorded four steals and forward Sam Tripp had two blocks and altered numerous shots. Nowakowski shut down TJ's big man, who only registered one field goal on the night.

Boys Basketball: Curran's Buzzer Beater Gives Panthers Dramatic, 66-63, Win over Broad Run

PF's Zack Curran Beats Broad Run with a Buzzer Beater!

Sterling (Dec. 19, 2009) - The area's favorite melodrama played its latest episode Friday night at Potomac Falls High School and the leading man this time for the Panthers was junior Zack Curran as he hit a 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds left to give PF a key AA Dulles District boys basketball, 66-63, win over Broad Run.

Curran was just one of the stars on the Panthers center stage as PF (2-0 in district, 6-1 overall) erased a 58-49 deficit midway through the final quarter against the previously unbeaten Spartans (1-1, 6-1) with the help of three big 3-pointers and then a tenacious defense which forced three turnovers in the final minute alone.

The first big shot for Potomac Falls came after Broad Run had posted the 9-point lead as Curran, who finished with 12 points, hit a trey from the left corner that stopped BR's 8-0 run.

Kevin McGaughey led Broad Run with 20 points including an "and one" with 1:51 to go to put BR ahead 61-55. Greg Graves cut the lead to 61-57 with 1:28 to go on a put back of his own miss.

Another Spartan turnover led to Pete Simoneau's 3-pointer to trim the lead to 61-60 with one minute to go. BR got back two points with Taylor Johnson at the foul line to lead by three, 63-60, with 36.4 seconds left. Johnson finished with 17 points.

Then Lukas Mihailovich, who had a game-high 23 points and was the hero with a buzzer beater and a school record 50 points in the Panthers 111-108 triple overtime win over Stone Bridge a week earlier, dropped a tough fadeaway 3-pointer with 24.3 seconds left to tie the game.

The Spartans moved the ball down the court but the Panthers intercepted a pass and were moving the ball back up the court with 10 seconds left when they were granted timeout -- even though the PF bench was actually talking amongst themselves about how many time outs they had remaining when the officials granted it. BR had plenty of fouls to give and they fouled with four seconds left after the Panthers inbounded it.

After the next inbounds, the ball went to Curran in the right corner by the Panthers bench and he sank the shot that sent the PF fans, dressed in black, rushing the court in a happy mob of a celebration.

The officials cleared the court and put 0.9 seconds back on the clock but Johnson's three-quarters court shot smashed off the backboard and fell away as the celebration restarted.

Loudoun Could Get 60 Inches of Snow Saturday! OK ... That was a Shameless Headline to Get You to Read Our Final You Pick'Em Column of the Year!

In Line at Giant Buying Milk and TP (aka Ashburn) (Dec. 18, 2009) - Look I'm not saying that people in Ashburn are panicking in the wake of the forecast for 6 to 12 inches of snow Saturday but my neighbor just drove by and she had three cases of Charmin extra soft strapped to the top of her SUV.

So in midst of winterizing my garden gnome collection (don't want the little guys to get frostbite!) ... I thought I would wrap up our high school football You Pick'Em season.

We started in the Dog Days of August and ended in the well ... Dawg Days of December ... with Stone Bridge playing yet again for a state title and Broad Run ... nobody calls in Cornfield High anymore, do they? ... winning back-to-back state titles. More than a decade ago I went to my first Broad Run football game, just as a fan with my son, now 17, who was 4 at the game ... there were about 500 fans in the stadium and 400 were on the visitors side. That might have been the year when Broad Run went winless in football and boys basketball back-to-back.

Now all they do back-to-back is win state football titles and girls soccer titles and back-to-back-to-back in softball! Forget the corn, this high school puts its teams on Wheaties boxes! (Fun Fact: Tiger Woods has appeared on Wheaties boxes 14 times, second most to any athlete next to Michael Jordan at 18, ... wait a minute, Tiger ... 14 times ... hmmmm ... rings a bell, just can't quite place it ... anywho ...)

I digress!

So, Stone Bridge baseball coach Sam "Walk The" Plank emails and tells our crack staff to get on the ball ... surely his 21-14 pick of Broad Run, two points off of the 21-16 win over Amherst County would move him up the all-time leaders board for You Pick'em winners.

Well ... sorry to say but Plank got Ker-Plunked (before video games ... Ker Plunk was big time entertainment in the Sousa household) by not one, not two, but three others picks.

Yes, we had a 3-way tie (much like the voting for Coach of the Year in any Dulles District sport ... favorite reading material during the voting meetings: "Your OK, I'm OK" ... hey, you think that is deep ... don't make me go all "Martin Buber" on you!)

Ryan Rogers, Greg Dawson and Chris Robinson all had 21-17 for the win. For Rogers and Dawson it moved them both up to win No. 7 all-time (they get a free fill-up and 100 Green Stamps! ... sorry kids, you will need to be over 45 to understand Green Stamps). Robinson is a first-time winner ... Way to go all three!

On the Stone Bridge game, Ryan Price, living up to his nickname The Price is Always Right ... wins again, No. 10 all-time and now he is within six wins of the all-time leader Jason (aka The Oracle) Treon. Price had Phoebus winning 24-12, within 11 of the 15-10 final and edging out Robinson (24-14) and Dawson (25-10), who were almost double winners, and Tim Lieb (21-17).

What a great season! Please join us next year ... I promise to not "monkey" around with the URL between now and then!

Fine print: A big shout out to the wife of one local sports writer, we will keep her name anonymous to protect the writer, who says she enjoys our fine print each week. Let's just give her the nickname "Mrs. Lukat" ... all of the fine print this season has been produced by a "content farm" in Round Hill ... fun fact: every 10th employee in the Loudoun Public Schools has "Oblas" as their last name (look it up!) ... Three days after the Stone Bridge-Massaponax Mud Bowl game, the Bulldogs found a pair of cleats, a snare drum, a photo of Ronnie Shaban and the Massaponax starting defensive end buried in the mud ... yes we finally bought a Christmas tree, no it isn't decorated but I did find our two kittens hanging off it this morning, living ornaments, could be a new business venture ... for every photo you buy on VivaLoudoun.com this holiday season, an angel gets its wings ... My nickname in high school was "Smoothie King" ... I realize that didn't sound quite right ... When the in-laws arrive on Dec. 17 and don't leave until New Year's Day, that isn't a "visit", that is grounds for legal residence ... No, I'm not worried they will read the Fine Print, every time they leave town, they slip me a $20 bill and a 12-step brochure ... Whatever holiday you celebrate this season, please enjoy and be safe ... honestly, we can't afford to lose the viewers! Enjoy!

South Riding - The Freedom High School girls basketball, behind the inside game of 6-foot-3 Kelsey Buchanan (20 points, 11 rebounds, 5 blocks) and Jasmine Merritt (16 rebounds, 5 assists) defeated Loudoun County Tuesday in a Dulles District match-up of defending VHSL state champions with the host Eagles winning the Division 3 crown last year and the Raiders taking the Division 4 title.

Dionna Scott, who like Merritt, pushes 6-foot, chipped in 16 points with five steals as the Eagles, despite losing starting point guard Jessica Escorza in the opening minutes to an injury, proved to have too much height and depth for County.

Freedom (2-0, 5-0) defeated Loudoun County (1-1, 4-1) four times last season on the way to the school's first ever Dulles District title, Region II title and state title -- in any sport.

Tuesday's meeting, with Escorza's early exit and the loss for County of point guard Kerry Sarver to graduation, was a turnover affair with the two teams combining for 53 total turnovers.

The Raiders jumped out to a 9-2 lead and the advantage could have been bigger as they missed a couple of easy shots with the lead. Freedom then went on a 9-0 run to take the lead before the end of the first quarter and the Eagles continued, scoring 15 of 17 points, to take a 17-11 lead that they would never give up.

Volleyball: Loudoun County's Juliane Hanna Named Gatorade Virginia Volleyball Player of the Year

Chicago (Dec. 16, 2009) - Loudoun County senior Juliane Hanna -- who helped the Raiders to three consecutive AA VHSL state titles -- has been named the 2009-10 Gatorade Virginia Volleyball Player of the Year.

The Gatorade Company -- which has been honoring the nation's best high school athletes for 25 years now, made the announcement, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, on Wednesday.

Hanna is the second Gatorade Virginia Volleyball Player of the Year to be chosen from Loudoun with Loudoun Valley's Blair Brown, currently a standout at Penn State, winning it in 2004-05 and 2005-06.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Hanna as Virginia's best high school volleyball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year award, to be announced in late December, Hanna joins an elite alumni association of past state volleyball award winners, including USAVolleyball Olympians Kim Glass (2001-02, Horseshoe HS, Penn.), Kim Willoughby (1998-99 & 1999-00, Assumption HS, La.) and Ogonna Nnamani (1999-00, University HS, Ill.).

The 5-foot-1O senior outside hitter recorded 312 kills, 204 digs and 76 service aces this past season for the Raiders (26-3), who won their third consecutive state title in November. The 2009 Region II Player of the Year and the Dulles District Player of the Year, Hanna notched 41 kills, 33 digs, 11 blocks and 11 service aces in three state tournament matches to lead LoudounCounty to the title.

Hanna has maintained a 3.5 GPA in the classroom. She has volunteered with the Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation, to benefit people with cognitive, physical and psychological disabilities, and as a youth volleyball coach.

"Juliane Hanna is an all-around tough player," said Jim Bour, head coach of Westfield High. "The thing about her is I don't remember any weaknesses. She comes at you in waves; she's relentless. Hanna's just one of those players you want on the court with you"

Hanna has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball on scholarship at the University of New Mexico beginning in the fall of 2010.
