Are You Smarter Than a Fourth Grader? Ryder Sousa Wins You Pick'Em Again!

The great thing about You Pick'Em is we have some very, very smart coaches that like to play and for the second time this season, they were shown up by a fourth grader as VivaLoudoun.com editor Dan Sousa's 9-year-old son Ryder won last week's contest. And it wasn't even close.

Ryder picked Broad Run over Park View, 42-21 ... not far from the 52-22 final. Of all the other players, only Ryan Price had Broad Run scoring more than 35 points but his 41-14 pick was only good enough for runner-up.

So are you smarter than a fourth grader? Play You Pick'Em this week ... simply pick the winner and final scores for the following two games:

Dominion at Freedom
Loudoun County at Park View

College Corner: South Riding Sophomore Foss Helps George Mason Men's Soccer to Upset Win over Defending National Champion Maryland

The George Mason University men's soccer team knocked off defending national champion Maryland on Tuesday, 2-0, and South Riding native, Mike Foss, helped the Patriots to the upset.

Foss, a redshrit sophomore who went to St. John Bosco, assisted on the first Patriot goal and served the ball in that resulted in the second goal.

Foss was a 2007 graduate of St. John Bosco where he made the Dean's List in 2006 and 2007. He played club soccer for D.C. United, Northern Virginia Royals and the McLean Celtic. Foss was Captain of the D.C. United under-17 team in 2006 and helped United to two consecutive berths in the USL Super Y National Finals. He also made the national ODP pool in 2006 and 2007 and started in 10 games for the Northern Virginia Royals PDL team in 2007.

Volleyball: Brown Steps in for Sister on Maternity Leave at Loudoun County

Leesburg (Sept. 30, 2009) - Jenica Matthias is one maternity leave with the two-time defending AA state champion Loudoun County High School volleyball team and has turned over the head coaching duties to her brother, assistant coach Jarod Brown.

Brown reports that: "Jenica had her baby last Thursday, Brady Stephen Matthias (8 pound, 9 ounces, 21 inches).  She is home from the hospital and slowly recovering.  I am not sure when she plans to be back yet.  Baby and Mom are healthy and doing well."

If we know Matthias, bet on her return when Broad Run and Loudoun County collide next Tuesday in a Dulles District showdown.

Football: LC Coach Todd Hill Recovering From Painful Fracture of the Tip of the Thigh Bone

You would think Loudoun County High School football coach Todd Hill would have reason to smile these days with his Raiders undefeated at 4-0 heading into their AA Dulles District opener at Park View Friday but Hill suffered a bit of misfortune when he took a fall on Sept. 17 at Sherando.

Loudoun County Athletic Director Ken Wright said this week that Hill, who coached Friday's win over Liberty on crutches, has been diagnosed this week with a fracture of the tip of his thigh bone.

"I'll be OK, (it will) just take some time," said Hill in an email. The pain from the injury can't cloud his feelings for his team which made the Division 4 playoffs in 2008, Hill's second campaign after taking over a winless program. "(I'm) really proud of the boys. They are working hard."

Cross Country: Potomac Falls Leads Area Varsity Teams at Oatlands; LC's Julie Strange and Tommy Curtin Turn in Low Area Times

By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun Editor

Leesburg (Sept. 27, 2009) - More than 3,000 runners and some 85 high school cross country teams converged on scenic Oatlands Saturday for one of the largest meets of the year in Virginia and after eight overall races, it was powerhouse Potomac Falls with the best local team showing while Loudoun County had the top two lowest local times.

"It was an awesome meet today. We got lucky with the weather," said Tuscarora High School Athletic Director Derek Farrey, one of the meet's co-directors along with Freedom AD Matt Oblas. The overcast skies kept the temperatures down and while the water crossing was deep enough to get the runners wet, the rain stayed away until the awards ceremony for the Moore Cadillac Hummer Oatlands Invitational and then fell only lightly.

The Panther girls and boys finished 11th and 12th, respectively, in the highly-competitive varsity "A" races and had the best average team times among the 10 Loudoun schools with the PF boys averaging 17:26 and the girls 20:50. Individually, Loudoun County junior Tommy Curtin had the best Loudoun time with a 16:24 for ninth place overall in the varsity "A" race and Loudoun County senior Julie Strange had the best Loudoun time on the girls side with a 19:36, which placed her 20th in the varsity "A" race.

GAME SUMMARY AND COMMENTS:
The Stone Bridge Bulldogs began their quest for a 5th consecutive Liberty District championship with a convincing 56-0 win over the Colonials of the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology on Friday, 25 September 2009. QB Brian Rody was nearly perfect in his passing game, completing 12 of 14 passes for 246 yards and 2 TDs, all in the first half, as Stone Bridge jumped to a big lead in the 1st quarter and Coach Mickey Thompson began pulling his starters early in the contest. Rody’s excellent passing effort would have been perfect, save for a dropped pass and a receiver who stumbled while trying to maneuver to make the reception. Rody’s performance did wonders for his season totals, bringing his completion percentage over 50%; he has now thrown for 445 yards and 3 TDs in his first four games as a Bulldog, with just 1 interception.

In addition to Rody’s performance, Marcus Harris made the most of the opportunities he was given, scoring 4 TDs on just 7 touches (3 rushes, 35 yards, 2 TD; 4 catches, 104 yards, 2 TD). Harris now has a team-leading 453 rushing yards and 6 TDs on 80 carries for the season thus far. Sophomore Stan Johnson was Rody’s favorite receiver against Jefferson, hauling in 6 passes for 88 yards.
While the offense was amassing 483 yards of total offense, the Stone Bridge defense was stifling for the Colonials, holding them to just 32 yards of total offense for the game, including minus-28 rushing yards on 28 carries. The Colonials were unable to sustain any drives for most of the game; they did not earn a 1st down until midway through the second quarter, and that came courtesy of a Stone Bridge pass interference penalty.
It took very little time in the game for the Colonials to dig themselves a big hole; starting at their own 20, the Colonials lost 13 yards on a bad snap from center, and 2 plays later QB Kevin Karn was sacked on his own 2 yard line for a 12-yard loss. A short punt put the Bulldogs in business on the Jefferson 26; 7 plays later, the Bulldogs took the lead and never looked back.
The Jefferson offense was forced to punt the ball away on all 6 of its 1st half possessions, the Bulldogs, on the other hand, scored touchdowns on all 6 of theirs (not including a 1-play possession just before the half). With the score 42-0 in the Bulldogs’ favor at the intermission, Coach Thompson kept the offense on the ground in the second half, showcasing some of the Bulldogs’ freshman talent, with promising QB Ryan Burns at the helm and Sean Rankin-Bell and Warren Miles at the running back positions. Rankin-Bell impressed with a 7-carry, 105-yard performance, highlighted by a 74-yard TD run in the 4th quarter; Miles gained 25 yards on 5 carries, and Burns gained 11 on three carries. Senior Mike Girdy also saw 2nd half action, scoring on a 10-yard run to cap a 12-play, 65-yard drive to start the 3rd quarter.
With the win, Stone Bridge improves its record to 4-0, and 1-0 in the Liberty District. The win over Jefferson is the 29th consecutive Liberty District regular season victory for Stone Bridge, dating back to 2005, when the Bulldogs moved to AAA and joined the Northern Region. The next game for the Bulldogs is at home against Marshall High School on Friday, 2 October. Marshall is 0-4 (0-1 in the Liberty District) so far this season. Thomas Jefferson, whose record goes to 0-4 (0-2), will host Washington-Lee (1-3)(1-1).
NOTE: Two Stone Bridge school records have been set thus far this season, both by junior Spenser Rositano. As previously reported, he set the record for the longest punt return in school history, with his 75-yard return against West Springfield on 17 September. That return eclipsed the 72-yard return made by Khalil Conteh against Bishop O’Connell HS in 2004.
Rositano has also set the school record for longest punt; in fact, his 68-yard punt against Heritage and his 63-yard punt against West Springfield are the two longest punts in school history.

Broad Run Comes up Big Again in the Big Game

By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun.com Editor

Ashburn (Sept. 26, 2009) - The Broad Run High School football not only won its 19th consecutive game Friday, but the Spartans did it big, rolling over rival Park View, 52-22, in a AA Dulles District opener that saw defending Division 4 state champion Broad Run score 39 points in the first half.

Broad Run (1-0, 5-0) dominated the first quarter and went up 14-0 and then the Spartans exploded for four touchdowns in the second quarter, three on passes from sophomore quarterback Connor Jessop to senior wide receiver Adrian Flemming. Leading 39-7 at the half, Broad Run senior running back T.J. Peeler went 54 yards on the Spartans first play from scrimmage in the second half to make it 46-7.
